Multiple routers lose connection to the internet but ethernet is fine

I am at my wits end here. This has been going on for months. I have searched everywhere and cannot find a solution.

I have Xfinity internet and an Arris Touchstone TM822 modem. I have tried two different routers with this modem (Asus RT-n56u and Linksys WRT54G) and neither of them works, though they both seem to fail in different ways. The PC that is connected to the router via an ethernet cable works fine regardless of the router being used.

When the Linksys is installed, the connection to the internet is maintained but wireless speeds slow to unusable levels. All attempts to access websites time out.

With the Asus router, the wireless speeds slow to unusable levels and then the internet connection is lost, though the connection to the router itself is fine. The 5GHz network disappears as the speed begins to drop. It also seems to drop its connection far more frequently than the Linksys.

Both of the routers usually reconnect after about 15-30 seconds, but sometimes it can take a minute or two.

Is this a modem problem? Are both routers beginning to die in the same way? I have restarted both routers and the modem numerous times with no results. I bought the Asus after the Linksys router started randomly resetting itself, although it hasn't done that since I reinstalled it. I have no idea what to do. I am on the verge of simply switching internet providers and buying all new equipment.

with both units check that there firmware is updated if it is try using third party like tomato to see if firmware issue.with both routers if there open you may have leaches sucking the bandwidth so much that your wifi cant handle it. on the routers and the pc make sure the wifi drivers are updated and check if there are a lot of wifi near your. if there a lot try changing the channel your using, here in my condo there 72 unit owners with wifi broadcasting and a lot of them are on the same channel jamming each other.

The Linksys is running the latest stock firmware and the Asus is running Padavan. The Asus router was up to date before I installed Padavan‚ but the problem exists regardless of which firmware it is running.

The Wi-Fi is secured‚ so that isn't a problem. I don't think it's the drivers either‚ as the issue exists on every device connected to the router (phones‚ tablets‚ tv‚ etc). It is on channel 11‚ the least crowded channel. There is only one other router on channel 11 and it has a signal strength of around -90 DBm.

Judging from the difference that exists between the issues when using different routers‚ I suspect they both may be failing in their own way. I want to be sure‚ though. I don't want to buy a new router if I don't have to.

Update: I don't think I made this very clear. Both routers are on channel 11 and both are secured. Also‚ they are never running at the same time. I simply swap them out occasionally to check the other's performance.
