Issues with running games, am I overestimating my system?

Hi guys,

I just recently upgraded my system with a MSi nVidia GTX 630 over my old evga nVidia 8400. Obviously, this is a huge improvement. I have Ripjaws memory, which has 8 GB overall and is clocked at 1333 MHz. My processor is the ol' faithful Phenom II 965 Black Edition. I can't remember the exact make of my motherboard, but it's a Biostar, and it's Micro ATX. This isn't an awful system, but for some reason I can't even run Torchlight 2 on medium, even though I could run it on low with the 8400. Am I crazy, or shouldn't I be able to run a game like Torchlight 2 on high? I know my computer isn't all-powerful, but Torchlight 2 doesn't have exactly cutting edge graphics or specs. Could someone help me out, maybe offer suggestions for what might be wrong? Obviously, I've updated all my drivers and made sure everything is correctly installed. For extra information, I'm running on a 720p monitor at 1440 x 900. Thank you!

because a 630 is a really low end card, depending how much you paid for it (if any at all) you overpaid lol. getting a entry lvl gpu (such as a radeon 7750 or gtx 650) would allow you to play though you may think tl2 isnt graphically intensive (for your card it is) on med-high settings with a good constant fps.

The one I got was $80...

I forgot to mention I can only support PCIE2.0.

PCI-E 2.0 is just fine but as said above^ the GTX 630 is a very low end card and that is about all the performance you are going to get with Torchlight 2 sorry. I know that is not what you wanted to hear after spending your money on a "upgrade" it sucks but it is what it is.

So not spending a ridiculous money, like maybe $120-150, what card could I get that could let me run TL2 on high? I bought a new card just so I could do end game raids with one of my friends.

do not worry about your pci-e version. even a gtx 680 (the highest in the series of what you have) cannot saturate pcie2 if im not mistaken, and a 680 is leaps and bounds faster than what you have.
as an advice, before you buy, ask here (or other forums) or from a friend who knows. so that you will get more out of your money.
we have a chart here in toms (and other tech sites), check the gpu's there, or the monthly BEST graphics card for the month, there you can see the price range, so choose from there based on how much you are willing to spend.

I'm glad you just posted, because I'm actually looking at buying a GTX 550 Ti. Would this allow me to run TL2 on high at 60 FPS?

I lied! I'm actually looking at 560. The 550 doesn't have enough clearance for my rig, the GTX 560 that MSi offers does.

So I'm stuck until I can afford a new processor?

You should check them and report back. Often times CPUs throttle themselves when overheating.

There must be some problem with your system because as you can see in my youtube link, you should be able to max the game with an hd7770 and a 965BE when not recording.

Do you record gameplay?
