Hi, my HDD crashed on my laptop and became unbootable. I have connected it to my other pc but despite being seen in the BIOS it is not available in disk management, windows sees it on device manager as an unrecognised device. Bizarelly, I was able to recover some data by uninstalling it and booting into safe mode and before windows 'installed' 'no drivers' for it. It actually appears and is given a drive letter etc before windows 'installs' drivers for it. I could see it with some recovery software. I managed to get some data with this method but thats now stopped working. More interestingly when this recoivery software connected to the HDD it could still access the drive when windows couldnt see it. I have no idea what the issue is. Any help grateful for.

Freezing is the very last thing you would ever want to do.

First try to take an image of the drive onto another good working drive. And then recover data from the image. Do a google on ddrescue. You can run it from a Linux boot CD to create an image.

But I do agree if it is high value data send it to a pro.
