Here's the problem:

  • My Dell HD has crashed
The HD is not being recognized in BIOS
    It ran on XP Pro
    I have no installation/recovery CDs
The sticker with the key is still on the pc
Can I use a regular XP Pro disc and just use the key I have?

Solution
Yes you can use XP Pro media and the key attached to the PC. You also might be able to get recovery disks thru Dell but they will charge for them. You might have to install some drivers.

Thanks... I'll give it a shot and see!

I doubt regular (retail) XP media will work with your Dell (OEM) product key. Most probably, you won't be able to get past the point where installation asks for the CD Key.

Look around for friends with old Dell's, and "borrow" their media. Or hit eBay, or local PC junkyard (they sometimes sell media, I got a disk years ago for less than $20)
