I have a Dell Precision 690
(2) Xeon 5130
9 GB Ram

My computer began re-booting on its own a few days ago. a few days prior to that, I had relocated my computer to a different office.

Initially, I thought It may be a heat issue. I moved the computer from under the desk to the desktop. No help.

I verified everything within the case was clean.

I installed SpeedFan. I have found that everything seems to be running within normal temps except my memory.

FB-DIMM0-0: 78C
FB-DIMM0-1: 75C
FB-DIMM0-2: 73C
FB-DIMM0-3: 69C
FB-DIMM0-0: 47C
FB-DIMM0-1: 49C
FB-DIMM0-2: 57C
FB-DIMM0-3: 56C

I removed all memory, blew out the DIMMS and slots and re-installed in a different order. Now they read:

FB-DIMM0-0: 78C
FB-DIMM0-1: 73C
FB-DIMM0-2: 61C
FB-DIMM0-3: 59C
FB-DIMM0-0: 53C
FB-DIMM0-1: 48C
FB-DIMM0-2: 50C
FB-DIMM0-3: 45C

Anyone have any suggestions what to look at next?

Those P690's should have a lot of air flow over the memory so not sure why they are reading so hot.

Now when it reboots does it just go BOOM and reboots or does it give you a quick Blue Screen of Death that you can quite see when it reboots?

Install this just to make sure its not a BSOD

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bluescreenview_setup.exe

maybe also try burning Memtest86 to a CD and see if there are any memory errors

http://www.memtest86.com/downloads/memtest86-iso.zip

Unzip that and burn the ISO using a burning program and then boot from that CD and let it run for like an hour. if there is any bad ram you will pretty much know within 30 seconds to a minute but let it run for a good hour at least just to make sure.

Do you have complete care on this dell desktop?

I was thinking you should go buy heatsinks for the ram modules
Does it have ram heatsinks currently?
Also just to make sure, have you run full memtest to ensure ram is functioning properly?

I know dell computers are bad for air flow, If this were my personal pc
i'd cut a hole in the case side and install a 120MM fan. Just my $.02 worth...

I have not ever gotten (in 6+ years) a BSOD on this machine. (Hope I did not just jinx my computer!)

It is an immediate reboot.

I will run the memtest later tonight.

Thanks for the help!

Well thats always good lol. Its funny because i just reinstalled windows on a P690 a few weeks back for a client. They use Solidworks and 2012 and newer don't support XP so i put Win7 64bit on them. Hes got the riser cards so that you can put up to 64 gigs of ram in it even though he only has 6 (it was 2 then added 4) but i know i use FanSpeed too and maybes its because of the raisers but he doesn't get memory temps so thats why i was like thats a first. but still there is a big intake fan on the front and big exhaust fan on the back. so not sure why they so hot. But then he is using raisers too so they get more air than if they were directly on the board it self and they do get the air after they pass over the CPU.

I know its an old thread but though i'd toss one other thing in there. Not sure if those are listed from Bottom to top or top to bottom on the motherboard it self but it was bottom to top going down the list it would make sense since it pulls air from front to back and since those bottom 4 do run in the same path as the air flow from the bottom CPU. So it because be cooling it with already hot air. Plus its towards the bottom too so the air flow isn't as great either.
