Hi all,

Bit new on these forums but after researching my problem for a few days I am absolutely stuck.

Problem:
When I load any software (games or otherwise intensive gpu apps), my graphics card will cease to function - ie tv detects no more signal and the sound continues for about 5 seconds (till it reads everything it can from the RAM). This only happened after upgrading my graphics card from a Geforce 250 GTS to an eVGA 780 GTX Classified.

I suspect the PSU unit to be the culprit although most websites say that the one I have is a bit overkill for my system anyway.

I've had this system for about 3-4 years so the PSU may have aged?

Anyway... Tried removing my OC - went from 4100 to 3300. Nothing...

Tried removing everything from the USBs. Nothing...

Tried reinstalling the drivers completely wiping everything. Used DriverSweeper to make sure Win8.1 doesn't reinstall my bloody drivers from the old card. The only thing I didn't yet do is reinstall Windows 8.1 altogether.

Now for the specs:
MoBo - eVGA X58 Classified SLI 3x (yes, the gfx card is plugged into the 16x pciex)
CPU - Intel i7 Extreme 975 @ 3,33 GHz (LGA 1366) - no longer OCd.
3x 2GB DDR3 - corsair dominator gt triple channel- fan included (if that makes any difference) - no OC on this either
GPU - evga 780 GTX classified
4x hdd drives 4x WD - 2x of which black edition in SLI.
1x DVD+/- RW drives
1x card reader
6x fans - 2x chasis and 2x cpu on a prolimatech heatsink
PSU - corsair HX850w single rail (first edition) - says the 12V is capable of 70A - now tell me that's not overkill for one GFX CARD...

I left nothing out. I'm considering upgrading to a 1000W power supply, but it's an expensive leap and I need to be sure it's worth it.

Any suggestions will be kindly appreciated.

Thank you!

Temps are CPU - not higher than 45 ish under full load and GPU - got it to 60 degrees in full load but it sometimes crashed before reaching 50... So temps are all normal. CPU stress test is great. Worked for weeks at a time when using the old graphics card and doing a fair bit of daily gaming.

The CPU takes up quite a bit of power as it's a first generation i7 extreme. old socket... oldskool... however it's had no problems being OCd and removing the OC doesn't make any difference. It crashes after the same amount of random minutes.

Tried reconnecting the PCIE power adapters in 10 different ways. Same thing every time. Problem is I don't have another power supply to test it with.

Upgraded the FW on the MoBo as well. Defaulted every single setting.

Here's another thing that happened - when I ran the latest 3D mark, everything went perfect until a few seconds before the last test finished (3rd sword fight - dx11). The CPU was OCd mind you (@4.1x GHz even). ------ SINCE THEN it never went past the first few tests - cloud gate. It seems that if I leave it off for a reasonable amount of hours it will do well in its first try, but i've yet to confirm this 100%.

So CPU stress test - perfect, GPU - miserable.

Also, are you saying that it can't be the PSU even after 4 years?

Ran Speedfan and realized I was already using evga ELeet to monitor the voltages :)

VCC3V: 3.31V
Vcore: 0.65V
VRAM: 2.21V
VChipset: 1.46V
+5V: 4.79V
+12V: 10.56V
VCC1.5V: 1.33V
VSB3V: 3.28V
Vbat: 3.18V

This is what I get from http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine:
Minimum PSU Wattage: 731 W
Recommended 781 W

Sorry if I seem a bit of a noob, but does that mean
1) my PSU is done for and that I have to get a new one preferably the same OOOR
2) use this PSU for a different PC and get myself a more powerful one (in which case what would you recommend in terms of a PSU to cover my OC needs? CPU and GPU preferably - active cooling only - I prefer Corsair :) )

Also thanks a lot for your help!

UPDATE - Speedfan was reporting that voltage, however I've had different results with OCCT - This reports 12.26V on the +12V voltage - i reckon that's better right?

After a very long night, the RAM tests came up all clean. Didn't manage to do much else. I'm literally stuck. Think I'm just going to have to buy the other PSU just to rule the damn thing out. If the new PSU will cause the same issues, I'm sending the graphics card back to the retailer.

Latest voltages are:

UPDATE:
Started the RMA process for the graphics card. if all goes well I should have a new one in a couple of weeks (hopefully).
