I am currently running with a core i5- 2400 and a gtx 550. I'm looking to upgrade my card to a mid to high range gpu. Is this cpu suitable for something like a Radeon 7870? If not what do you guys recommend?

a 7870 would be great, your cpu could handle a higher end gpu as well, a 7970 wouldn't be a problem.

You'd be fine with a 7870, you could probably even do with a 7950 if you wanted to go that much. You can find a good 7950 on sale for bargain prices right now...last I saw some of them were dipping under the $200 threshold. So take advantage of that if you can find one...

Wow that's fantastic! I'm definitely going to opt for a 7950 if I can find the money for it

I'd personally say wait until we have more info about the new AMD GPUs, but most graphics cards will not be bottlenecked by your CPU.

I would look out for great deals on a 7950/7970, or a GTX 760/770 however, with the release of AMD's new GPU's.
