Hello, I just saw a video from LinusTechTips about the AMD Radeon R9 290X card and I don't know much about it. I do know Radeon is coming out with their next card series. Is this part of it? Is it the highest card in the new series because I noticed it had a 6-pin and 8-pin PSU plug in so it has to be pretty good. Also, is this card better than the 7970? I am getting that soon but if these come out soon and have a better one for around the same price I want that one.

Solution
It's the top end of the new series, 5 TFLOPS, 2816 shaders, and a probably sweet price point. This card will be much better than the 7970 which is to be re-incarnated as the 280x of the new series

So the new series has almost a clone on steroids of each card? Where as the 7990 will be reintroduced as the 290x? What do you think the price point will be for the 280x if it is better than the 7970?

Do you think the 280x will be way better than the 7970?

Well, if the 290X isn't much over $300 I will probably just get that one. I just want to insure I can run all games on ultra nicely and be future proof. I now have the 7850 but it doesn't cut it. I wanted the 7970, a card that people don't call a mid tier card but rather a high end card. I will be happy to pay the same price I was going to spend on the 7970 for a 280X for a bit better performance but I don't understand why people on forums are calling it a "mid" tier card? It will easily run all games on ultra including Crysis 3 because the 7970 does this? So why call a better version of it a mid tier card?..

It's in the middle tier of the new lineup...top tier of last generation becomes mid-tier in next generation. It will run everything out now pretty dang well, but with more capable hardware will come more demanding games...

But the 290x is the top of the tier? right behind it follows the 280x? along with 3 cards behind it? Thats at the med-high range if not high
