So the next series of Radeon cards was recently revealed and originally I was set in stone about getting the 7970 because it will run all games on ultra nicely and it is at my price point, around $300 but the 280x was said to be about $300 so should I get that? I will be getting a card in december so when is the rumored release date?

More about : amd 7970 280x

it will be out by december. wait until then, by that time the 7970 will have price drops, and you'll have benchmarks of the 280x with working drivers.

And don't rule out NVidia either. Prices are constantly changing so get the best value at the time of purchase. The HD7970 may even get a price cut as well.

The only architectural change I know about in the new AMD cards is the Positional Audio feature:
http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-introduces-radeonr9-and...

My main question about this new audio feature is whether the AMD card is doing all audio processing or if it works WITH an existing audio solution.

Right now the HD 7970 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B6Y01Y/ref=as_li_q... is too good of a deal to pass up. It's an amazing performer for the price. You can always play the waiting game for the next series to come out but you'll never get a card if that is your strategy. You should go with the best buy at the time you need a card and right now the 7970 is it. It is a fast card and overclocks very well for a good price.

But if the new cards are literally just around the corner, I think it would be worth waiting out if you want the best deal.

+1 i would wanna see what the R9 series brings before buying. Thats one good way to get buyers remorse

Just around the corner being at least another month before you can buy and the cards will be at a premium for a while at that. AMD plans to release them just before the holidays so they can mark up the new cards. I was in on the live stream announcement with 28k others and they gave some preliminary prices which I highly doubt are going to be accurate. All the cards will end up being $100-$200 more than they stated.

I still would wait..Yea you could get a 7970 but once the r9 hits people will have buyers remorse trying to return the gpu or selling it trying to get the new ones when they could of waitied. Same that happen with the titans then the 780 dropped everyone was floored and some was selling their titans getting the 780 and some waited

So, I have some choices. I could wait for them to drop and get the 280X or I could get the 7990 when it's price drops? Btw, what do you guys think it will drop to? I don't want the best bang for my buck. I want a card that will run all my games on ultra nicely and be future proof. A 7870 could go for $100 and I wouldn't spend my money on it because it doesn't reach my standards. I am not purchasing a next gen console and decided to completely convert to PC gaming so I need to insure I can actually play the games I buy on ultra.

Use THIS as a performance guide but compares apples to apples (OC'd with good cooling versus reference cooling lower clock):
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2013/07/04/msi-geforce...

Points:
1) If $300 is your max then I recommend the MSI GTX 760.

2) If you can swing $400 then consider the GTX770 (I like the Asus OC model).

3) I suspect the new AMD cards will be overpriced in terms of value initially.

4) The HD7990 is a dual-GPU card, far above $300 even if it drops a bit and DRIVERS for Crossfire, though improved, are still a big issue. Lots of info about frame times, FCAT etc about that.

5) Games packages:
a) GTX760/770
- Batman Arkham Origins

b) HD7950/70
- choice of three games in Gold Tier package.

c) new AMD cards
- ?

6) "new" AMD GPU's are likely just a refresh with no architectural changes just like NVidia did with GTX680-> GTX770. (some True audio feature, minor memory tweak memory. etc. nothing to get excited about).

Summary:
I don't think current card prices will drop much when the new AMD cards come out, so I think it's likely best just to buy what's available for now.

*But I still recommend WAITING just to be sure since the R9 280X details should be available very soon.

Based on what you've said I recommend the Asus GTX770 which has a backplate and excellent voltage regulation and other high quality parts:

You just linked a page that shows a 7970 getting better frames then a 760 and you're trying to tell me to get a overpriced 760 when the 280x will be way better and the 7970 is LESS than $300 with a MiR. I have no intention to purchase a overpriced 760 as it will not run all games on ultra and if it does, not for long. I am waiting for the 280X

On the Battlefield 4 Beta the AMD 7970 poops all over the GTX 670 and 760.

Looks like the Radeons are the golden child in Frostbite 3's eyes.

Fine.
I'm not going to argue with you. The HD7970 GHz is slightly more money than the GTX760 and performs slightly better.

There are other Pros and Cons aside from raw frame rate but it's not worth discussing. It will be interesting to see if the 280X is overpriced initially compared to an HD7970 GHz.

Don't forget to factor in the Games Package when calculating value.

Yep. Though you have to look at STEAM for current prices.

I just bought Bioshock Infinite on a one-day sale for $13, Dirt 3/sleeping dogs/Hitman Abs are currently $25 normal price, Deus Ex HR is $20.

Batman AO is $50 because it's new so it's not so clear cut, plus it depends what games you have and if you want Batman etc.

Well, if you still haven't decided, let me, NOT AN NVIDIA FANBOY, tell you what I'm doing.
I'm in the same boat as you
Need a new GPU for my new build for BF4, and my price point is around yours, $350<, and I'm looking at 7970 for the games, and 280x for the performance
First off, "F" nvidia at this point. 280X is benchmarked, check this out, 3fps better than the now $400 770 . . .
http://techreport.com/r.x/radeon-r9-280x/bf4-fps.gif

Also, the 280X is $300, $310 for slight OC model, and $349 for Top model
I'm personally wanting this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Before you decide, let me tell you that the 280X is now classiffied as a Mid-range card, So it won't come with BF4 in the never settle progeram (bummer for me, thats what I built this new PC for) It only is available with the 290 and 290x ($500 and $700)

So, Old tech 7970 with BF4 in the future and 2 other gold titles, or Brand new improved 280x with only 2 silver games and no BF4 available . . .
This is where I'll leave you . . . I'm personally waiting for the never settle to come out for 280-x to see to see if the packaged silver titles are worth paying $60 more for BF4 retail.

Well, If you are going to buy those games anyway, may as well Purchase an Nvidia. If neither had games, and you preferred AMD optimized titles, I'd say go for AMD. However, as you seem interested in Batman Origns and AC4 . . . Hold off until november . . .

http://videocardz.com/46903/nvidia-announces-geforce-gt...

People don't realize that Nvidia and AMD are VERY close in performance, Nvidia just cost more and gets a good 3-5 extra FPS a higher cost. If you hold off, and get an Nvidia with $180 of Games, 2 that you will love, I'd say Nvidia is better for you at this point.
