Screen Tearing with New 120Hz Monitor.... Any Ideas?

Hi Everyone,

So I just got my Asus VG278H today and it's been pretty cool so far. No dead pixels and 3D is wicked.

One thing that's bugging me though is the screen tearing in Borderlands 2.

I previously used a 60Hz monitor with V-Sync and the fps capped at 60 and had ZERO problems. No screen tearing, just smoooooth game play.

Now, with this new 120Hz monitor I have screen tear.... What gives? Ive tried capping the fps at 120 with and without V-Sync on. I've tried Unlimited fps with and without V-Sync on. When I cap the fps to 60 the screen tearing is twice as bad.

Anyone have info on this? Is there something I'm doing wrong or a setting that I missed?

Thanks!

@bystander, Thanks for the reply. I'll check out the adaptive vsync in the Nvidia control panel. But like I said in my first post.... I tried with vsync on AND off and it still noticeable while it's turned ON. Thanks anyways

A couple things, if adaptive v-sync is set on in the control panel, it will force adaptive v-sync when v-sync is set in game. So just because v-sync is set in a game, doesn't mean normal v-sync is actually being used, depending on your Nvidia Control Panel settings.

Some games, v-sync just doesn't work. For what ever coding reasons, v-sync does not always work in some games.

If the settings in the Nvidia Control Panel is not over writing game settings, you will want to test different games to be sure you are having tearing. It is possible if nothing works, that you are not getting tearing at all, and instead having some signal problem with the monitor, which could be a faulty monitor or cable.

it's kind of strange..

In Borderlands 2, when the Nvidia experience/control panel program is open, it caps the fps to 60 with NO screen tearing but I can't get it to go above 60fps in game. It looks just like my 60Hz monitor. When the Nvidia programs are off/closed the frame rate gets up to 120 in game but the tearing comes back. It's really weird.

All my other games like BF3 and Tomb Raider look perfectly fine when they go above 60fps, no tearing.

I really don't understand the problem, which is a bummer because Borderlands 2 is my favorite game

Can you see if your monitor is actually running at 120hz when playing Borderlands 2? There are a few games which don't go into 120hz in game, unless in Windowed mode, or you enter the game with Stereoscopic 3D enabled, then disable it after you are in with Ctrl-T. I suspect that you do not have v-sync on in BL2 and you are also stuck at 60hz in that game.

3D is turned off for sure. The game does run at 120Hz, unless the fps stat in BL2 is lying to me. But it only works when the Nvidia tools are off. I'm only stuck at 60 when the tools are running and it looks fine... unlike when I cap at 60 in the settings and the tools are turned off.

I don't have your monitor, so I don't know for sure how to look up what is being used for you, but for myself, I go to the monitor settings on the monitor itself. On one of the screens, it tells me what hz my monitor is currently running at. That is the only way I can tell for certain.

If BL2 has a cap of 118, it may appear as if V-sync is on and you are at 120hz, but in reality, v-sync may be off, and you are just at the games FPS cap. Given the tearing, and tearing only in this game, the latter seems most likely.

About the Stereoscopic 3D suggestion, you completely misunderstood what I was telling you. I'm saying if the game does not allow for 120hz normally, you can turn Stereoscopic 3D on, once you are in game, you hit Ctrl-T to switch it off (though the drivers are still on with this method). In most games which do not allow for 120hz, this method will. It also had an added benefit of enabling Lightboost for 0-motion blur.

Checked my monitor setting, sure is at 120Hz. Sorry I did misunderstand you the first time but I just tried the 3D on, then in game shut it off with Ctrl T, didn't change anything for me.

I don't understand why BL2 is having issues.... it has a 120 fps cap in the settings so why wouldn't it support it?

It's kind of frustrating because I was really looking forward to play BL2 with 120fps (or better than 60) but now I'm seriously questioning buying this monitor. Although 3D is neat I could live without it.

On a side note, Tomb raider looks AWESOME compared to my 60hz monitor. I guess it on a game by game basis?

You may just want to live with the screen tearing and let the FPS cap. This is the most smooth experience, even though there is tearing. However, if you could put a FPS limit of 100-110 (experiment), you may find the tearing is far less noticeable. When your FPS are the same as your monitors refresh rate, the tearing does not move up and down the screen fast, and becomes obvious.

ouch, not the answer I was looking for with +2,500 gaming setup.

Maybe it's Borderlands 2 fault, lol. Everything else like Tomb Raider and BF3 look really cool with the 120Hz monitor. It's just a shame that no matter what combo of settings I use with Nvidia or in BL2 I can't get higher fps without tearing.

Since I really hate screen tearing I might just have to deal with it on 60fps, at least the tearing is gone (but only when Nvidia locks the fps).

Oh well, look like this will go unanswered. Should have got a PS4 :p

I'd suggest you try a FPS cap at 100 FPS. V-sync adds latency anyways. Most people don't think you can get tearing when below your refresh rate, and that is because it just isn't as noticeable, as long as it is not capped close to the refresh rate itself. The overall experience may still be great to you.

Is there a way to cap fps other than the in game settings?

EVGA Precision X has an option to do it at the bottom of the main window, and I believe MSI Afterburner also has a way to do it.
