Currently running an older system that I had built for me 5-6 years ago. Its now finally hitting that point where it cant keep up with some games I want to play.

Skyrim, Civ 5 are the things im trying to play most, but both I have to play on low graphics and get constant video card crashes to the point of unplayability.

Current Specs -
MB: Asus PK5-VM
CPU: E6750 @ 2.66
RAM: 2GB + Ready Boost
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

Is it just ready for the heap or is there somewhere I can squeeze a bit more life out of this system

Solution
Similar specs to mine. I recently upgraded from a GT8800 to a GeForce GTX460, deciding that anything higher would be overkill for the rest of the system. A similar upgrade for you might buy you a year or two before game requirements exceed your PC's capabilities.

It also depends on the monitor resolution you want to play at - no point in putting a big card if your only playing at 1680 x 1050 on a 22" monitor.

A little more memory will not hurt, both of those games can use quite a bit.
Maximum sensible upgrade would be a HD7750 or GTX650.
If the installed power supply has no 6 pin PCI-E power lead/s go for the 7750, its modest power needs are supplied through the PCI-E slot itself.
Not sure about Civ5 but Skyrim is notoriously CPU limited so I'll suggest you look into overclocking the current CPU, there's a decent article in the Overclocking Forum stickies dedicated to the C2D processors.
