The only performance difference you will get from an i7 over an i5 is if your doing video rendering, otherwise they are pretty much the same thing and will perform the same during games.

You say that now, but he is looking for a future proof PC.

Stay the course, the I7 is nice if you have the money for it. It will in no way hinder your gaming, and in fact will probably perform better than the i5 in a few more years.
