I have a limited budget and those are my options - I've heard bad things about the Gigabyte in terms of overclocking and the extreme4 mobo has 2 16x pcie. I dont know what to do please help

I dont understand what you are saying, ive heard that the gigabyte has bad cooling on the north bridge, the asrock 990fx extreme 4 has an fx ship, so what are you saying?

i'm saying most of the top overclocking results that aren't on an asus motherboard are on a gigabyte ga-990fxa-ud3/5/7. that in general overclocking circles the ga-990fxa-ud3/5/7 has a stellar reputation. and that i don't think whomever is telling you its junk knows what they're talking about. Asrock has a pretty poor reputation with AMD overclockers right now for their recent product issues with the FM2 motherboards, that many of those problems showed up on the AM3+ motherboards doesn't help either. I'm not saying that gigabyte is the greatest company around or that all asrock motherboards suck... frankly if i was building an intel system i'd take an asrock over a gigabyte if my goal was overclocking, but that's not the case with AMD.

Look: https://teksyndicate.com/forum/motherboards/gigabyte-ga-990fxa-ud3-rev-30-stay-away/139832
And: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/34710-gigabyte-990xa-ud3-overheating/

news to me... in the circles i run in that board has been one of the favs delivering the best overclocking results for the least ammount of bling. maybe those people had poor case airflow with poor cases? there is a lot that happens when a vrm overheats, sometimes it's a case airflow problem, sometimes its a motherboard heatsink issue... heck ive done what that guy did in the first link before on motherboards... sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get a good overclock... but i've not seen it as necessary for the ud3 yet.

Are you talking about the 990XA or the 990FX?

I was looking at both of those boards...but for budget reasons, I ended up going in a completely opposite direction.

Anyway, One of my concerns was compatability with my older hard drives. I have 2 high capacity ATA-133 drives. The 990FX Extreme 4 actually HAS an IDE connection on it. (and a floppy drive connection) So if that is important to you, get that one.

Otherwise, I'd go with your choice of Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 with 8350/8320.

You're probably going to get about the same OC from both of them, but you're looking at flipping from an 8 'core' cpu down to a 6 'core' cpu if you go with the asrock board.

Do you think the 990fxa ud3 is worth the extra money, when compared to the 990xa ud3

it looks like the main difference between the two are an extra pci-e on the fxa, with 2 16x ports. Unless you're going to do some serious crossfireX, I'd go with the cheaper option.
