Best Monitor for my Needs? (2013)

Hi there, everyone!

I am looking for a monitor (I've just been using the one on my laptop), and I need some help...

First off, I'm mostly looking for specs and monitor technology recommendations, but I would like some recommendations for ACTUAL monitors as well, but please only after my questions about specs and monitor tech have been answered (thanks).

I have some specific needs and requirements for what I'm looking for, but since I've never actually owned a decent monitor before (my last monitor was an LCD bought in 2003-2005), I don't know what to look for.

However, that being said, I am majoring as a hardware and software engineer, so I do know a lot about computers (especially the technical aspects). Also, I have done quite a bit of research on monitors, so overall, I have a pretty good idea about different monitor technologies and features.

So, here are my "needs" for a decent monitor.

1.) I would like to use this monitor for gaming AND movies alike, so in that aspect, I don't know if I should get a TN or IPS monitor.

2.) I am building a $4000'ish desktop right now, so even though it would be unnecessary for me to bother with a 120 Hz monitor if I JUST had my laptop, the fact that I'm having an GTX 780 SLI setup might warrant me getting a monitor that can run more than 60 Hz... (which means in that case, IPS is out of the game)

3.) That being said, the games I play are NOT FPS-type games, but mostly RPG-type games (although occasionally I'll play third-person shooters or first-person in Skyrim). So, based upon that, I'm not entirely sure if I'll need a 120 Hz monitor... Still, I am wanting to start playing the Batman Arkham games, but I have no idea if the average FPS for those is over 60 FPS, meaning a 120 Hz monitor would be necessary.

4.) I do NOT want a 3D or ultra-wide (21:9) monitor!

5.) I'm wanting a 27" monitor, mostly for my movie watching, but I'm open to 24" inch as well (although I would prefer 27").

6.) My price range is $300-500, but considering a lot of the Dell UltraSharp monitors that usually cost $800 or so can be on sale for a lot less, I might consider some of the $700-$800 Dell models.

7.) As for the 27" Korean/Monoprice 2560x1440 monitors, I'm not so enamoured with them, as even though they would be REALLY nice for movies, my desktop won't be finished for about 6 months, so playing Skyrim (the game I play most) with my Nvidia 540m Dell laptop would look horrible in 1920x1080 on that thing (because a 540m cannot in any way handle the native 2560x1440!).

8.) Also, color accuracy is kind of important to me (ONLY for movies, so it isn't really a show stopper), but I don't know if input lag is all that critical with RPG games like Skyrim (again, I mostly play Skyrim in third-person, so first-person stuff isn't important for me)... What I mean by this is that I'd prefer to get an IPS monitor, but the only reason that I wouldn't would be if input lag was a big thing for Skyrim and other RPGs.

9.) I'd prefer to have a "glossy" finish and a glass screen, but the glass part isn't necessary (but the glossy part is a MUST!)

So, overall, my preference is for a 27" IPS monitor, that costs $300-500 (except for the $600-800 Dell UltraSharps that can be on sale).

Again, I would prefer NOT to get a TN monitor, unless input lag is a big problem with Skyrim and RPGs.

Additionally, while I'm open to the 2560x1440 monitors, they're not my first choice, but I'm torn because I have no clue if 1920x1080 would look bad on a 27" monitor.

Finally, while 27" is my preference, again, I'm torn because I don't whether or not 1920x1080 looks bad on a 27" monitor (because even though I play games 1-2 away from the monitor, I'll be watching movies on it from 6 feet away, so 27" is nicer for that...).

So, if 1920x1080 really does look bad on 27", then please recommend some 24" ones, as well.

Anyway, thank you to everyone for your help and advice, and I'm looking forward to hearing your responses!

EDIT: I should probably be more clear about something: I'd prefer to have a 27" IPS monitor that's at 1920x1080, but 2 things about that worry me... First, as I've said, the games I play are mostly RPGs, so i don't know how significant the input lag of IPS monitors would be on these games (somebody please answer that!).

Secondly, I don't know if 1920x1080 looks bad on a 27" monitor, so if somebody could also please tell me an answer to that, I'd appreciate it.

If 1920x1080 DOES, in fact, look bad on a 27" monitor, could somebody ALSO please tell me how bad/good 1920x1080 would look on a native 2560x1440 monitor...

Whew! That was a mouthful! :p

Anyway, thanks again to everybody!

Thanks for the suggestion, but even though that was the first choice on my list before, I'm leaning more towards IPS now (but although input lag on IPS sucks, I'm not sure if it really matters all that much on third-person Skyrim and RPGs... does it?).

Hi - The dell 27" Ultrsharps are nice, as are Eizo, NEC, & a few others.
But, I don't believe any of the top brands have glossy fronts except
Apple. So, if you must have glossy, start with the Apple displays. But, they are more than $900.

I'd get the newer Dell 2713 which has a less aggressive anti flare than the pervious 27" Ultrasharp, if you can find the right price.
The Asus pa279q might also be worth considering.
