Built PC, sound only works through headphones and not without them!

I have a Gigabyte Z87 HD3 mobo, and when I try sound without mobo, the volume bar in Windows shows that sound is playing (green bars going up and down) but I can't hear anything.

I plugged my HD audio wire that I got with my case into F_Audio slot in the mobo.

And it should work with what instead? Do you have speakers plugged in or what?

I would assume it would work without headphones? Or does motherboard sound only work with headphones in.

With no headphones: Windows 8 shows Realtek Digital Output, it doesn't produce any noise
With headphones in: Windows 8 shows Speakers, sound produced in headphones

My old HP pc worked without headphones, did it have an inbuilt speaker?

It only works with some sort of speakers plugged in. There might be a speaker on the mobo, but that is for the beep sound only.

Can you please answer my question above this post? :)

Yes! Specs say, it has an internal speaker. You will not see that again. PCs don't have speakers any more, but your monitor may have.
