Hey all as the title says I'm trying to share my D drive over my network to other users. However I want you to have to enter in a password to view it and edit files. I'm having trouble doing this I can share it but I can't seem to password protect it.

Also I'm not trying to share with another user on my computer, I'm trying to share with my laptop or anyone with the password.

Thanks I know it should be simple but I can't seem to figure it out.

Solution
yea this is how we set up my clients who have a server but no domain. I make sure the user name and password on their PC is the same as whats in the server and they never had to put anything in when connecting to it.

If that is what you want to do and just make sure the username and passwords are the same that is easy.

On both PC's you want to make sure these items match.

1) User name. If they aren't the same right now its ok. What you want to do is right click on Computer and then go to Manager. Click on Local users and Groups and then on users in the right side. Now find your user name and right click on it and Click Rename. These should be the same on both PC's so you can choose what ever you want. Make sure its the Name...
Easiest thing honestly is if these are both your machines make the username and password the same. Then you don't need to use a password on your stuff but everyone else will.

And when it comes to sharing its not just a password they need. They need a username too (Which is the username of the computer SHARING the drive)

Also what version of windows are you running ect? Sometimes XP has issues going between vista and 7

Hey drtweak I'm running Win 7 pro on desktop and Win 7 ultimate on laptop but yeah I had read somewhere that said that. Could you walk me through these steps or point me to a web page that would tell me how thanks.

Make sure its the Name section and not the FULL NAME section. The Full name section is just the user's name it self not the user name on the PC.

2) Set both PC's to the same password.

3) Right Click on your D drive and go to properties. Click on Sharing Tab then click on Advanced Sharing. Click the box that says Share This Folder. Give it a name. either D or Files or what ever. Then click on Permissions. Delete the Everyone. Now click the add button and type in the user name you changed in step one and click Ok. it should find the user name. Then it should list it where it listed the Everyone account. In the box below click on your username and then click the box for Full Control under Allow. Then click ok.

Now if you click on Start and then in the search menu type the PC name like this

\\PCName

and press enter. It should now just bring up the shared folders. You should also see your new shared drive as well. If you want Right Click on it then select Map Network drive, give it a letter and then ok. Now when ever they are on the same network you can just open up the drive without having to go to the PC name all the time. Just make sure both PC's are running lol.

if you need any other help just ask

Hey drtweak I followed your directions and see the shared drive on the computer I'm trying to share it from but I can't see it on the laptop. I also looked under the actual computer on my network and see the D drive but it says I don't have access. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Thanks.

Edit: Also my pc is on a wired connection to my router and my laptop is on wireless.

Shouldnt matter is its wired or wireless. Lets try one more thing.

Click on the network icon next to clock. Open network and sharing center.
There should be a change homegroup option in there. Click on that.
Should get another option in blue to change advanced homegroup options
In here under the home/work group make sure folder sharing is on. Public sharing can be turned off. Then turn off password protected sharing. Then last on set windows to manage login. Restart pc and see if you can reconnect then.

Also you say you can see the pc your trying to connect to in the network. When you click on that it gives you an access denied or do you see the share folder and that gives you access denied

(Sorry if my instructions arent right on. Not in front of a pc right now)

No thank you their very clear but to answer your question I could access the other computer but once i was in that directory I couldn't open D drive. However now since I changed these options I no longer even see the other computer on the network. Here's a picture of how my home/work setting are.

Sorry if I'm lost I just can't believe it's this complicated to share a drive.

my bad. On the last one select user accounts manager login not windows homegroup.

And you dont see it anymore? Odd what we changed shouldnt affect that. Try restarting both. Also try this.

Right click shared drive. Go to security tab. Make sure your user name is in there. If not add it and give it full rights.

Alright after I changed that and did restarts on both machines I can now see my main computer from the laptop but still can't access D. Just to be clear when I was changing the permission I was suppose to be doing that on the mapped drive not my actual D drive right? Thanks.

Okay that seemed to do the trick both of those machines are now out of the homegroup. The windows sharing for this kind of thing seems broken it's very weird. Two more questions though. So it didn't ask me for any credentials I imagine this is because my user name and password are the same on both machines. The last question is now when I boot up my desktop it keeps giving me an error that says something along the lines of the mapped drive isn't recognized or working. However if I give it a minute it finds it. Is this normal or is there a way to fix it? Thanks for all your help though.

Ignore that. What windows is doing is trying to connect to your mapped drive BEFORE the network has time to get an IP address and find the PC. I don't know why microsoft hasn't fixed this yet. They should have it be a delayed start or it doesn't try to remap it till AFTER it gets an IP. stupid Microsucks XD. But yea i have my Media Drive shared out or my GF and room mates can access it. My laptop and my PC use the same username and password (So it doesn't give you any logon credentials) and i wanted them to logon as the Everyone user but they only have Read. this way i don't have to give out my password, or create multiple accounts, or have to worry about them changing anything. I kept running into issues and i pretty much found out what i had you do. remove homegroup, I had to take my media folder and add the Everyone user to read permission not only on the share permission but on the drive permissions itself as well. but yea now if you want someone to access it just have the browse to your PC and then use the user and password on that PC. If you want it so everyone can read it then add the Everyone to the Share premissions and then Add the Everyone (With read only permissions) to the D drive Security tab itself as well. This will allow them to connect to the PC with out a username or password and read the stuff but not modify any of it.

But yea Windows 7 sharing can be a pain. I don't do homegroup bc yea that works with Windows 7 PC's on the same network but its easier to deal with out it. Also if a windows 7 is on a homegroup and you have a XP machine trying to connect to it. Forget it. Won't work. have to remove homegroup lol. Lame i know.

Any other questions?

Nah man I think that's it thanks so much for all the help. I think last time I had this working I was sharing out a folder not a whole drive that seemed to work a little easier. Any way thanks again.
