Need a compatible video card replacement for my msi gt685 laptop?

Recently my nvidia geforce gtx580m died on my laptop. The laptop is an Msi gt 685. I was wondering if someone could help me find a replacement card? Until I can afford to build a tower I would just like my laptop to be usable.

So I'm hoping to find a replacement card, even a downgrade just to keep the laptop running. Something for $200.00 ish would be awesome.

Can anyone help me find a card that would work in my laptop? and where to buy? thanks in advance!

Unless you're super comfortable taking a laptop all the way apart and putting it back together, don't attempt this yourself. Take it to a local computer shop and have them handle it.

After I found one to buy online. I was going to take it to Memory express (local pc shop) and have them install it. The trouble is they don't carry anything for it and I'm not sure how to find one online that is compatible

I did a little hunting, and here are some options (note, none of these are under $200...that GPU is quite expensive even used):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-580M-GTX-580...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NVIDIA-GTX-580M-2GB-GDDR5-Graph...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alienware-Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-58...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/130720311449?lpid=82
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-675M-...

A few of these are the gtx 580m and a couple are other GPUs that I've read should work with your system. Might require a flash of your BIOS, let the computer place handle the messy stuff. I would run these options by your technician to make sure they can do the work, and that it will work

Good luck!

Hey thanks for all the info! I had one other concern which has me back to being confused again!

I was chatting with another expert from the site and they said my laptops gcu wasn't exchangeable? And I couldn't change the card out? I tried looking through msi's site and even sent an email. But I can't actually find anywhere that gives that information directly to whether or not the card is in fact removable and/or interchangeable.

If you could help me with that last piece of knowledge I would be all set and know my next move! Thanks again for taking the time to help me! It's very much appareciated!

Check out this msi video, it's a disassemble video for all the GT6xx series laptops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owOaREnRHKo

Starting at 2:35, they have the removal of the GPU heatsink, and then the GPU. That should help you visualize what's going on.

Good luck!

That's something I'm not super sure on, to be safe I'd just get another GTX 580m, like the first one in the list I posted.
