New Computer. Specs below. Very little software installed and I run slave drives to store everything. Main drive only used for OS and software. Just noticed I have 9 Gigs available out of a 120G drive. something is certainly not right here.

Recycle bins empty, no music on this drive...again everything stored on Slave Drives.

All temp files are only at 47k. I also made sure to turn off hybernation as that is a known culprit.

I installed and ran file size utility. Found one folder in C Drive labeled D at 5 gigs. It contains x64 Gaming monitors and DPINST.exe. I am just not finding any files that seem large enough to account for sucking up 100's of gigs in drive space.

Not sure what to do or what to look for at this point. Any suggestions? Thank you, Jon

Solution
Yea very big page file. For hibernate sometimes its tricky. Even thought you have it disabled there is one setting that might keep it enabled.

Go to power options then click on your power scheme. Then click om advanced power options (will be blue link) then expand the sleep section and go to hybrid sleep. Turn that off. Now the hiberfile.sys should be gone as well.

Ok, you were correct. I did miss a setting. Rebooted and gained a full 18 gigs of space. Thank you, I thought I had all settings correct.

Now I am in pursuit to gain more. I will try what others are posting as well. Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Do you suggest just turning this down or could I set it to one of my slave drives? Not sure of any possible performance issues if I switch pagefile to another drive.

Also, I do a lot of graphics and video rendering do you thinkg lowering page file size will have any effect on that?

I do a lot of photo stuff as well. Lightroom and PaintShop Pro, and video via Corel VideoStudio.
An i5 and 16GB RAM. I've not noticed any slowness with a small pagefile. Everything zips along as usual.

Problem is back. Worked well and got a lot of space back until I rebooted.
I have page filing set to 1024mb. Have hybernation turned off.

What is odd is that I cleared another 14 gigs from my download folder also and nothing changed even after emptying recycle bin. Rebooted too. My first attempt at changing these setting freed up over 17 gigs. Now I cannot get more than 3 gigs. Any suggestions? I never had this issue with a hard drive until I installed an SSD.

Thanks for any help.
Tried to post photos but cant. Say's I am not a confirmed member which I've confirmed my email a dozen times.

Do this. This well help determine if its a windows issue or not. Compair how much space that windows is showing (Like if you right click and then properties on the SSD) and then open up the SSD drive, Press CTRL+A to highlight all and then right click on those folders and click properties. If there is a HUGE difference then its some kind of hidden system file. I know there are issues with the Install Folders in Windows that can build up on MSI files. Just cleaned up a client who had 15 gigs in here. Sometimes windows just duplicates them or doesn't remove them when it should.

It is showing:
Size: 99.7 GB
Size on disk: 99.8 GB

Here is what folder size is reporting:
AMD 240,329 KB
D 4,672,451 KB
Program Files 2,840,694 KB
Program Files X86 6,301,920 KB
Users 61,835,269 KB
Windows 28,839,260 KB

Not sure what windows needs size wise to instal but Users is enormous. I have no music, pictures or anything on C Drive. I use slave drives for everything except to instal programs. Even all my video editing temp files are dirrected to a slave drive. Not sure which files under Users I should start focusing on.

Thank you

Ok I unhid all folders. Checked Users more thoroughly. My Temp folder is 46,262,180 kb. Can I safely delete temp files? In theory you would think so as the word Temp means just that but I am nervous to start deleting them.
I guess start with disk cleanup? Any problems that can arise from running this? I have little faith in Windows to not screw something up.

Thank you

Click on the Oraginze Button at the top and then click on folder options then click on View.

Click on Show Hidden Files and also Uncheck Hide Protected Operating system files

then click on Ok.

Then go to Windows, and right click on a folder called "Installers" and then properties and see how big that is.

Installers Folder is 3.8 Gigs

I've got no idea about compatability and such but if you want some software that will optimize the OS for the SSD, you could try downloading the Samsung SSD Magician Software. Despite you not having a Samsung SSD, it should still work; I had an SSD in my laptop (which I have now moved out) but I kept the software when I cloned the disk and the software continues to work showing me basic drive information. Try downloading it and setting the performance to maximum reliability. This will change page file, hibernation, everything.

Hi Jon,

Did you ever get this resolved? I am having the same issue. I changed the Page File size to that recommended on this and other threads, turned hibernation off, I gained 60 GB back on my SSD and my SSD usage just about matched the internal folder usage. Then when I rebooted this morning it said there was another 30 GB on the SSD. The SSD says I have used 60+ GB of space but summation of all folders on the SSD only total 35GB. Hoping you resolved the matter and can fill me in.

Thanks,

Mike

You can move your Pagefile as well. Just turn it off on the SSD and turn it on on a Disk Drive. Also turn off Hibernate. Turning off system restore can help free up space as well.
