External Hard Drive seen as Removable Disc

I plugged an external hard drive into my computer, but can't access the information because it's being recognized as a removable disc drive and asks me to insert a disc.

Following the suggestions on this and other sites, I changed the path letter, but the device is still being recognized as a disc drive and requires me to insert a disc. Of course, I CAN'T insert a disc because it is an external generic hard drive. Is there a way to change the device from disc drive to external hard drive?

external drives should be seen as a Removable Dick Drive since only internal drives are seen as Fixed Disk drives.

have you tried the external drive on a different computer?

Yes, I tried it on 3 other computers with the same result. What good is an external HD if it's not going to let me open it!? The disc has information on it that we need.

it sounds like the external drive is having problems. Can you copy the data back to a new drive from your backups? or do you need to try and recover files from this drive?
