networking home unplugged

hi, i've tried several times to network two of my computers and i'm still getting a message , unplugged, both network devices are working and cable is plugged in, every cable i've tried, doesn't matter, can i get some help on this

i'm using just a direct cable(the oversized phone plug type), they are plugged in to each computer,i've ran network setup wizard too. i wanted to access internet thru my main computer from the other one in the living room,both have win xp pro, i made sure both network devices are working also, everytime i get message unplugged, but they are not, i've tried several cables also and still same answer, unplugged, can you help me fix this?

So you have one computer with two network cards, with one slot going to an internet connection, and the other going to your 2nd pc? I want to make sure I understand the setup first, because this can be answered with several methods depending on how you get internet to the first computer. Is there any particular reason you do not want to use a router/switch setup for a home network?
