Bad Sectors in External HDD

I've had this 1TB (56% used space) seagate external HDD for few months, but on last week, whenever i watch a video (on VLC) it keeps showing "bad file descriptor" and then it will stop the video, at first i thought it was only the problem of vlc, but wenh i tried WMP, and KMP it shows the same thing.
After googling the problem, i found out that there is a possiblity that the HDD might have bad sectors in it.
so i tried the error checking option (but because it's taking a long time i cancel it)

so my question is, can the error-checking repair can repair the bad sector? and if it can, how long it will take to finish the scan? (approximately)

Thanks in Advance

Solution
hook it to a SATA port on the motherboard instead of usb. .............. it takes as long as it takes.............. make sure you select both boxes when you do the scandisc/repair function............. let it run overnight...........

yes, i did download seatools for windows, but when i want to run scan, it keep saying that scanning can cause the HDD fail, and all the data will be erased. (after reading that i changed my mind and decided not to scan it further)

so i just did the error checking (took me 18 hrs) but the result is satisfying. all the videos are working normally again. all the songs working normally.
