I've lost my ac adapter to my hp simplesave model MD2000h external hard drive. I know it is 12V and 2A and when I plugged in an adapter with those specs, the HD did not power up. Do I have to use the right wattage? If yes, how would I find out? The HD has no specs written on it and forget about the HP support sites! I just don't want to blow the poor thing up.

Sorry about that. I'm in the UK & didn't know where you were.
Looks like you'll have to find a supplier of generic AC adaptors in your locale and contact them directly for a psu which will work with the hp MD2000h. There are a few sellers who supply them over here (eg. www.portabledvdplayerspares.co.uk/external-hard-drives-33-c.asp) but I won't find any US version (assuming that's what you need).

If you can find the link. I only found the European version there.

You may have an Adapter.
And it may show on it 12v at 2A and allso the right wattage output.

That may be fine.
But what you are forgetting is the polarity of the connector.
This can often lead to the problem of the drive or device not powering up when the new adapter is connected.

Or the device seeming like it has no power.

Well, wouldn't you know. After weeks of calling and getting the run-around by HP, I finally found the right place. It's Western Digital phone numbers to order a HP part (at least my part). WD supports HP and WD. The lady on the phone found my part (ac adapter). After she heard about my long-term disaster, she felt sorry for me and shipped the part and shipping cost for free to me.
