I tried to install Steam into the 64 bit Program Files folder and it appeared to work at first, but then I tried playing a video from my harddrive and I couldn't hear anything, but it turned out the sound was just extremely quiet without having changed the system volume, and it was very low-quality (like being underwater).
I tried uninstalling Steam and restarting the computer, but it did not fix the sound issue. How do I fix this?

Solution
Just tried that and it didn't fix it, so it mustn't be Steam causing the problem. I'll play around with the speakers, and see if that fixes it.

EDIT: It's my headphones. Tested a backup pair and it worked fine, so it looks like my headphones are busted. Anyway, thanks for the help guys :)
