looking for a gaming graphics card

Solution

Do so at your own risk. Understand there is no regulation of what PSU
suppliers put on their specs. Off brands can and do exaggerate/lie about
their performance.

To answer your question, the downfall is a bad PSU can damage/destroy other
components if & when it fails.

A lot depends on your psu. If you have a good quality psu of 450w, the HD 7750 series would be much better and less expensive (does not need additional power connections), or the HD 7770.

Both are available on the site you linked.

if I end up going for the 7770 does it make a difference which brand I go for just ive noticed the msi one is £68, then you can go for the saphire which is like £76 but the specs seem the same?

First, you're going to need a new psu before upgrading to any gpu that requires secondary power connections. In fact, you probably ought to upgrade the psu in any event as the OEM 300w you have is most likely poorly made (lowest bidder) and marginal at best.

THIS psu (same site) is outstanding and a good value. Get this and you can run any 7770 or similar card.

Brands are what they are. All brands have good items as well as lemons. I have always used Asus, but Sapphire is also well respected. You might also want to look at the GT650ti BOOST card.

oh i see i didnt realise that, thanks for the advise its most appreciated, seems a bit naughty if they do that, you'd think there would be a british or even a harmonised standard that stops them from doing that, guess they may be able to tweek there specs if they put the efficiency percentages down though!

jesus christ thats well dodgy the fuse protection should be the first thing to blow, gd example of a bad design or where someone in the factory has put a fuse with to high rating in, thats extremely dangerous as cables melt and can cause a fire or even worse. I just assumed no compmany would do such a thing and there would be strict regulations to enforce no cock ups like that but suppose if you've got some gimp in a factory putting fuses in then theres always a possibility

ive been having a look about maybe if i went for a cheaper unit but a one thats made by a well known manufacture like corsair or coolmaster would that be a better option they're around the £25-30 mark

You're correct, but there is only trusted lab reviews, trusted brands, and advice
from knowledgeable sources. I'm one of the many that bought a junk PSU
before I knew better. I was lucky, found out n switched before I learned the
hard way.

hi guys sorry to bother you lot again just ordered my saphire 7770 today and thought id take your advise and start looking into investing in a better power supply now. I noticed that on the ebuyer specs for the 7770 it says i need a 500W power supply would the xfx 450W still be enough, or would a be better going for these?

ive noticed theres an xfx 550w one but thats touching the £50 mark and i only want to go upto a max of £45 if i can, the cheaper the better really just want to get away with spending the least but also make sure the power supplies got enough wattage for everything and is safe

Hi again - stay away from Aerocool, another bottom feeded. Some OCZ's are good, others not. Let me check on the one you listed. Will get back to ya in a few min.
OK - Of those three, I'd go with the Corsair. The OCZ you listed is mfg by HEC, not an OEM I'd recommend. The
Corsair is mfg by Channel Well and is a better alternative. If you decide to spend the xtra £5, the XFX is mfg by
Seasonic and is a step up from the Corsair CX. But, the Corsair is fine for your needs.

And enough to run your system with any current single GPU below hd7970 or gtx770.
