I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Windows XP Home Edition that just will not launch. Says a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. I have tried everything short of using a reboot/repair disk (I don't have one). Any help would be appreciated. How can I 1) reboot safely and 2) access and save some of the directories on the hard drive as I need to save some of the data on the hard drive to another media.

Hello... One method I use is to remove the harddrive and connect it into another working Windows computer to retrive files and data, and too determine extent of file corruption... there are many free DOS based OS that boot off a USB 1.0 / 2.0 sticks, to do the same, but I find this method more time comsuming.
