Hey Everyone,

Long time lurker here, but I decided to register today so that I may contribute to this amazing community any way I can! But . . . first, I need some help from you guys. :ange:

To the point. Right now I'm using a 9800 GTX+. I was using a GTX 470, but it died earlier this year. I have all the necessary components to support modern video cards, such as a decent power supply (600W) and a motherboard with PCI-E 2.0.

A friend of mine is offering his year old GTX 660 Ti for $165. Newegg Link It's a great price, but I want to know if it's better to save the money and wait a few months. With AMD's new video cards releasing next month, I'm very excited about the potential discounts I can get on their 7000 series during Cyber Monday.

Will there be an option to buy a better video card later on for around the same price, or is the 660 Ti an offer I can't refuse?

The games I play aren't exactly graphically taxing: Battlefield 3, Arma 3, and Shogun 2 at 1080p (60 hz). I'll mostly want to play them on the highest settings while still maintaining 60+ fps.

If you guys have any more questions, please, don't hesitate to ask me. I'm definitely okay for waiting a little longer, but only if I can get a similar deal on a better video card. But I'm telling you. . . playing Shogun 2 on DirectX 9 @ 13 to 50 fps is making me cry a little.

Thanks. :)

I can't predict future pricing any better than you and there is no certainty that a GPU promo in you price range of $150-200 will appear during this holiday season. The PowerColor card I linked above for $180 AR is still a better value than what you friend is providing. If you are willing to wait, go ahead and wait to find a better deal.

Those are some of the most graphically demanding games you can be playing. You should probably wait, I'd save up an extra $100 and get something better. The $250 price range has some great cards now. You can get a 7950 or 760, probably a 7970 soon seeing how amd's cards are dropping in price.

A lot of people (in Toms forum too) say the 660 Ti is almost on par with the 7950. From my perspective, paying $250 or so for a 7950 that has a minimal performance increase over the 660 Ti isn't a good investment, especially if I can pay $100 less for the 660 Ti.

I am hoping for the 7950 to be closer to $150 to $200 max by Cyber Monday. Is this too high an expectation?

Then would you suggest I wait until Cyber Monday? If I'm not buying my friend's video card, I'm definitely going to wait a few more months.

Well. . . I posted this topic hoping to read other peoples' opinions.

I see two options right now. I can buy the video card from my friend now and hope that a better card doesn't get priced down to $150 on Cyber Monday, which would make me regret my decision.

Or wait out two more months and hope that a better video card will be priced at around $150 - $200. A better video card meaning a video card that surpasses the 660 Ti by a significant margin. That would mean something like a 7970 Ghz Edition.

Going by how AMD's video card prices are dropping quite significantly, I feel like a $200 price-tag for the 7970 isn't too high of an expectation.

Your thoughts?

Okay, I will wait and let my friend know that I will not take up on his offer. He was going to donate all of the money to the gaming community he and I are in, so he was doing this for a good cause. Oh well. . .

Thanks for listening. :)
