Is a sound card right for me?

Hi guys,

So in my upcoming build I'm rocking a lot of good quality components and now I'm deciding on audio peripherals. I plan to get the Bose Companion 3 because although they are a year or two old, they produce amazing sound and are half the price of the Companion 5's which are $400.

I also plan to get the Sennheiser U320's. Mostly because I want a decent headset that is also compatible for the ps3 and my upcoming ps4, while maintaining good quality for PC. I've seen the PC363d's but for 300$ and to only be limited to computer use, i think that's a bit much.

Now, onto my initial question. I've heard a lot about sound cards and that if i have to ask, i don't need one, but i thought it would be good to ask.

I'm planning on the Asus Maximus VI Formula, and they boast their enhanced Supreme FX onboard audio. Is this good enough to make the most out of a good quality headset and surround speakers that I have chosen? Or, should I actually look into investing into a Soundcard?

It's worth noting that Im not a pro audio guy who will be working with music professionally. I game mostly, but I would certainly appreciate awesome audio for games, movies, etc.

Any input or feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

linustechtips is a audiophile who usually insists on getting a dedicated sound card, and he says that the formula has the best audio quality onboard on any mobo, and says that is is good enough for him. the formula sound will be perfect.

my pleasure

i have a rog rampage iii extreme and the onboard sound is also quite excellent (for the brief time i actually used it... i upgraded to a home theater system so dont use it now).

i'd suggest getting something else besides bose (honestly most bose products are crap that only sound good because of technology... but are built shoddy) but your call.

either way... i would say that you are fine with the integrated sound.

thanks again ssddx :D
It's funny, i've had bose all my life and had nothing but awesome experiences with them. I have the QC15's and they are amazing headphones. I also have a home theater system by them and It's awesome! I find it hard to see where everyone is coming from with their bad experiences and their claims of Bose using cheap material. I'm lucky I guess?

i've had one of the non noise cancelling over the ear headphones in the past which were about $150 retail or so and the build quality is crap. the cable is so thin, perhaps 1/16" thick that it actually broke from under a year of use and i packed it in the storage bag and was gentle with it. the replacement headphones i purchased are much heavier built and have a 3/16" to 1/4" cable on them which is sure not to break.

i have bose speakers in my car and while they sound better than any basic sound system i wish i had the choice of another brand.

bose is like apple... until you actually see the bad side you dont really know. i thought the bose speakers and headphones were great too until i tried something else out.

its just like how apple fans think apple products are so good.....cough... why an ipad 128gb costs $300 more than the 16gb is beyond me (since a flash card is like $100 tops)... oh its because they dont let you actually upgrade it... and just like how they make the battery unreplaceable unless you tear it completely apart. once you figure out the cons you really never look at such companies in the same light.

haha cheers mate, I like your humor.
Very odd, I'm just glad I've had good experiences with them. I'll keep you updated on this if I decide on something else!
