Hey guys,

I bought a Asus g750jx and a BenQ XL2420T as a display, I connected the display to the laptop trough a VGA cable and I couldn't increase the refresh rate past 60hz on 1080p.
I connected the monitor to my desktop which runs on a gtx460SE trough a DVI cable and it ran smoothly on 120hz 1080p. I tought that the cable is the problem so i snatched a high speed hdmi cable and connected it back to the laptop but the problem persisted, I could only run 120HZ on 1440x900 resolution on the gtx770m. I tried with the latest drivers but the thing wont change. The laptop has only 1 vga and 1 hdmi slot.

Any help is appreciated, I'm running out of ideas.

@eatmypie
I don't know the cable version, I paid 20$~ for it. I already threw the packaged away.
I tried that driver solution, it didn't change anything after installation.
What HDMI cable would you recommend?
Also, VGA is not capable of 120hz?

I forgot to mention that I used the same HDMI cable to run 3D games from a ps3 to a 300hz TV.

Well first HDMI for a t.v is much different from a monitor, you can read the artical here about how that is done http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2379206,00.asp it talks about how a t.v really only will carry about the data of 30-60hz at a time even the fastest one's. but with a monitor it is different. they can send true 120hz data at a time. but you can't achieve this with a hdmi cable, you need a dual link DVI cable, which is never found on laptops. so you could run at 720p at 120hz but not at 1080p because you are being bottle necked by your cable. VGA came out around the CRT era and was meant for very fast refresh rates, but was not meant to go up to 1080p at those types of speeds

So not even a HDMI 1.4a ethernet cable will be able to output 120hz at 1080p?
I also have a mini display port on the laptop, will mdP-HDMI cable work in this case?
Sorry for assaulting you with so many questions but I tried talking to BENQ customer support but they lack the knowledge in this area, they blamed it on windows 8 :).
