I have a desktop machine with a mysterious symptom. A few days ago the machine emitted a loud bang and smoke could be smelt.
My first thought was the PSU had died, so I test it with a multi-meter and much to my surprise, it's fine. I booted the machine up for the first time since the mysterious bang and the system works fine. Checked the hard drive temp with Crystal Disk - all good there, so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what my next step should be?
I've read cases online about people who had similar things happen (one guy had a PSU that went bang three times and continued to work!), but I don't want to take the risk of keeping on using the machine
if this is likely to happen again - I'd rather just get a new PSU. What do people think about this situation? Many thanks in advance for any opinions.

Because of how caps are used, They may well blow(as long as they do not short out when they die) and still leave a "working" power supply. Problem being they work with the coils to lower ripple in the output voltage.

Your other parts work to even further reduce this ripple, but if it gets too bad they will not be able to work either.

By the time you hear a POP sound, chances are you will see the top of one or more caps blown out and open.
