I'm trying to decide which I should get, a gaming desktop, or an xbox one (definitely not the PS4) and Microsoft Surface Pro 2. I know it should be the obvious answer to go for the desktop (since I am in desperate need of a computer upgrade), but A.) All of my friends have an xbox and I really enjoy playing with them, and B.) the portability of the surface would really be useful in school. I can't drag a desktop (not even a mini-itx desktop) to my English class. It's ridiculous.

So all I'm asking for is anyone's opinion on what I should go for, or even a recommendation on a non-flashy/clunky (Alienware) gaming laptop that could be a third option within my $1600-ish USD price range. Thanks.

***P.S. Sorry for any possible spelling/grammar issues, I'm writing this on my phone since my laptop sucks so bad.

A $350 laptop for English class, and a $1200 desktop for gaming.

I'm a diehard PC fan, but if all your friends are going to be gaming on Xbox, then I'd get an Xbox. Playing with friends is better than playing better games alone.

Getting a Surface 2 Pro, Laptop or Surface 2 RT is the tougher choice. I don't know how much power is needed, but for normal word processing and taking notes, I'd go with a Surface 2 RT for more battery life. However, if you use it for other Windows stuff, a laptop or Surface 2 Pro would be better.

It looks like you've got a pretty sick gaming rig, so hearing that from a diehard pc gamer might seal the deal. And I actually have been trying to see which surface would be a better buy. I would be using it for word processing but I have heard bad things about the rt, since it makes the surface more like a tablet than a pc.

Yeah, I do have a nice setup and enjoy it a lot. That said, playing alone will suck when your friends get together to play and you can't. The Surface RT option is only good if all you are going to be doing is word processing, emails and just some basic stuff. The advantage is it has 3-4 times more battery life, so you can go to class with it and not run out of juice. The Surface Pro has an i5 or i7 processor in it, and drains power like a laptop, though it is a lot more compact than a laptop.

What is best there is a tough call and ultimately up to how you use it.

I think for that reason and the fact that it comes with office for free will get me to buy the regular surface. Thanks a lot for your help.
