Wi-fi conflict between 2 laptops?

Hi all,

I'm facing some kind of conflict on a wireless network between two laptops and need advice.

The network is my home wireless network. It is an 8mbps fiber optic connection. I have a wireless Linksys router.

I'm an avid League of Legends player; I play it from my HP laptop running 64-bit Windows. My normal in-game latency is around 140ms.

My dad has a Lenovo laptop running Windows 8. The moment that laptop connects to the same Linksys wi-fi, I find my in-game latency jumps to 500+ ms making it unplayable.

This happens so consistently, I was wondering if there is a logical fix for this? Why the process of connecting another laptop on the same wi-fi increases other laptop latency?

Thanks in advance :)

Gaming over wireless takes a lot of bandwidth and the competing use by your Dad, especially if he streams video, can be a real problem.

If your router is dual band and his laptop has an adapter that will use 5GHz, change his so it is not on the same band. Also, if that won't work you can buy a cheap N router and configure it as an access point using a different channel and SSID so that you can each use separate channels (from the three non-overlapping channels 1, 6, and 11).
