Essentially, my unexperienced brain (as far as video cards goes) can determine no difference between a 280X and a 7970. Anyone knowledgable on this topic able to clarify for me? Because to me, they both appear to be the same card, both priced at $300.

Thanks! :)

Ah, that is good to hear! I was afraid I would be getting nothing more than a 7970 (non-GHz) for my $300...! :)

Now, I have one additional question... I hear that AMD is releasing a cards called that R9 290 that performs somewhere between the 280X and the 290X... However I did not see anything about it in AMDs slideshow... Is this merely a rumor, or is there fact behind it?

Thank you again - Seriously! :)

I have not seen that rumor before.

I never said there would be a 280... (There will be a 280X though... It's @ 4:14). I was talking about the R9 290 (non-X).

As you can see in the slide (@ 4:30), there is text stating "R9 290" with a picture of the card...

Found it. Wonder why the 290 has not been all over the media only the 290X.

That is what I am wondering! Ugh... I need answers! ;-)

Most likely it is the same GPU as the 290x with something disabled and/or lower clock speeds. It is to get better yields out of their foundries, basically does not quite make it to 290X but we can still sell it with lower specs and price.
It is a basic trend in the Hardware market GPU's and CPU's.
