I've got my computer and monitor set up next to a Sony TV also connected with HDMI. Windows 8 uses the TV as an extended desktop.

What I want to do is play a video on the TV and have the SOUND for the video also play on the TV, while system sound effects continue to play on the USB speakers surrounding the monitor.

The USB speakers are the default sound system, so what I have to do is deactivate them before the sound then plays on the TV. Then I have to reactivate the speakers to get the sounds on them after the video is over.

Is there a way to automatically mix the sound source so that video showing on the TV portion of the extended desktop automatically outputs sound to the TV, while system sounds (games, too) continue to output to the speakers?

You gave me an idea. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (64 bit) lets you set a default of output display and audio source. Once I set it as the default for MP4's, a double-click on a filename is all it takes to bring the second screen to life. And it leaves my desktop speakers free for system sounds, music, and games.
