How much would performance suffer if I choose the $500 build over the $700?

Video card is the same for both builds, so it depends what you're doing. I suggest going in between and going for a FX 6300. Depends what you're doing, but more cores do not benefit current games that much. Video rendering and editing for example use more cores than others. Most modern games use at most 4 cores.

Well if you used the same case and cooling between the two, it's really a $450 build vs a $580 build

I'd go for the 8350, or the 8320 and the 8320 will OC to the 8350 speed. You also don't have a hard drive in either one. If you on a budget, drop down the cooler and the case, get the 8320 and get a better video card. I much rather have a better looking video card than a fancy case and cooler.

Go for this.

The GFX I neglected to downgrade most because its already a pretty slow card. The PC would be used for rendering and rare gaming...I pretty just want faster render times--if that helps. I'd like a semi-quiet, upgradable PC to use for a few years.

Refer to my option, it has a nice 7870GHz instead.

I was trying to stay as close to $100 as possible for the GFX Card as I intend to purchase a proper GFX card next year after the new series comes out.

Downgrade my build to a 7850 and keep the PSU, you need some headroom.

Any recommendations for some cheap, well-ventilated cases?

also, why did you add the RAM that you did? I enjoy learning.http://pcpartpicker.com/part/kingston-memory-khx1600c9d3b1k28gx

The R4 is a nice case to go for. I added that memory because it runs in Dual Channel compared to single channel.

Did you choose the newer(?) mobo because its 990FX instead of 970? Whats the difference? (between the chipsets)

You've been super helpful btw--thanks ^.^

The M5A99FX R2.0 has better stability with the 8-core AMD FX8320\8350 due to more power phases and as such does not throttle (clocks jumping up and down all the time) like some 970 boards.
