Title pretty much sums up my question: Why do we have tablets like the new Kindle Fire HDX with 8.9" 2560x1600 screens that cost $379, when desktop monitors with the same resolution cost twice that?

Isn't miniaturization the problem, not... making things bigger?

What am I missing?

If we were using 9" monitors, then you'd have a point. A monitor is maybe 4x the size of a 8.9" diagonal tablet screen

Getting a consistent slab 4x the size is more expensive.
