I have some nice speakers that are just collecting dust--a pair of large floor standing polk speakers, a center speaker, and an assortment of smaller pairs, some I've never used, which were to be my rear speakers. It's all from previous home theaters. I'm also building a new gaming computer. Since I'd like to finally use my speakers for something other than collecting lint, how hard would it be to get a sound card and use my speakers for a make-shift gaming 'theater'? Any specific sound card that works better for my needs? My new computer has the Asus Maximus V Extreme mobo.

IF you have high quality speakers a sound card could sound better, but most newer motherboards have build in audio that would be sufficient for most people

the asus motherboard you have has optical out
you can connect a receiver to it and your speakers to that receiver
this setup would have a much more superior sound quality than using a dedicated sound card or onboard sound
and plus i dont think your machine would be able to power all those speakers at once
thus the need for a receiver

Wow nice! This is perfect since I have a receiver that is also collecting dust, lol. Is there a good guide for this anywhere, for some reason it's been hard to find something through simple web searches

Guide for connecting a home theater? or computer audio?
Usually if your going with more powerful speakers than just the usual "computer speakers" (which is just a clever way of saying underpowered speakers) then you should be looking for guides about home theater or htpc setups instead of computer audio.

This may have been the problem with my web searches. I've been reading more about computer audio setup. I'll tailor my searches to guides for home theater setups using a computer. Thanks so much for the valuable info!
