Hi Guys,

Despite having used PCs all my life, I am very new to upgrading and dealing with the hardware.

I currently have an old Dell Optiplex GX 620 DT. With a 2.8ghz Pentium D. This machine has many small issues, it works fine, but can be slow and hates multitasking.

I would like to upgrade/build a new machine, but the Motherboard in my machine cannot use and processor newer than the Pentium D.

However, due to financial constraints I cannot build from scratch in one hit, and will be doing upgrades over several months.

What I want to know is this:

Are there any good motherboards (recommendations please) which would support my pentium D for now, but which I could upgrade to an Ivy bridge or one of the other core i3/i5 processors in a couple of months? I was hping to buy a new case and motherboard, and put my current Pentium D, HDD and Graphics Card Geforce GT 430 into it. Then I would over the next few months upgrade the processor, add an SSD and Upgrade the RAM.

I would appreciate all suggestions. Bear in mind I am a computer Hardware dummy and also have pretty tight financial constraints.

Many Thanks

Tom

CPU not compatible with current motherboards.
GT430 is perfectly good gpu for general work, but not a gaming card.

If you give us an idea of what your going to use it for and a rough estimate of your future budget, I'm sure we can come up with a build for you.

Hi Stig,

Thanks for your reply.

I am not a big gamer, the only 2 games I play are Football Manager and Minecraft. (Minecraft much more)

I was afraid that the CPU would not work with a new board. It means I will need to replace more in one go than I originally hoped.

Because now I guess I would need to buy a new case, motherboard and CPU in one go, and I guess my current HDD and GPU and RAM will work, temporarily until I had funds to replace them.

I do not need a machine which will run high quality 3d gaming, or video editing or anything fancy, but I want a machine which will perform all the usual tasks seamlessly.

Initially I guess I could spend about £200 ($330), on a case, cpu and motherboard. So long as the other components I have will work.

Then I could upgrade the other parts at my leisure.

Your current ram probably will not work since your system likely uses DDR2 ram and current systems use DDR3 which are not interchangeable. There is little benefit to using an old hard drive (which is likely IDE as opposed to the SATA types used currently) since it's likely to be small (by current standards) and HDD's aren't too expensive plus an new operating system will be needed (Linux is free). The GT430 should work in a new build but that'll be about it.

Thanks for the advice,

I guess I just need to suck it up, and build from scratch...Better get saving I guess.

Thanks again
