Hello!

I just got a brand new "eVGA GTX 680 Superclocked" card. I had some trouble with the drivers initially, having to format and reinstall my operating system in order for it to boot. For this reason, I didn't initially have any particularly good games to test the card, nor did I really have the time.

1st. problem:
I was initially just playing World of Warcraft. I wasn't super impressed with the somewhat mediocre FPS, but I thought "Meh, MMOs are usually pretty CPU intensive" and made due with medium settings. Once in a while (2-3 times per day), the screen would glitch and the sound would stutter for a full 2 seconds before telling me that the graphic card driver had crashed and rebooted. This is one of the issues. I tried resolving this by reinstalling the graphics driver from fresh, but it didn't change anything.

2nd. problem:
When playing the Battlefield 4 beta this very morning, I was absolutely disappointed with a framerate of 15-30 on low settings, with my friend, running a 660 GTX, getting smooth 60 frames per second with everything on max settings. Clearly, something isn't right.

I have contacted eVGA about the issue, and he recomends me to try the card in a different computer, but I won't necessarily be able to do this. I am somewhat more worried that my system has compatibility issues. Off the top of my head, the powersupply is a 850 Watts power supply, and the processor is a AMD Phenom II Quad-core of ~3.4 GHz. I will upload the exact specifications when I get home a few hours from now.

Summery question:
- Could the issue be not with the card, but with another component of my system?
- Should I return the card, given that it is only a few weeks old?
- Should I be worried that the card is socketed a little askew because of a really poor PC case?

UPDATE:
Alright, here's a few updates:
The local computer guru tested and found one of my ram sticks faulty, and it has therefore been removed. This, however, has not changed the problem in Battlefield 4 (Which has now launched, and I am getting similarly terrible results. The GPU did not, at any point, reach any critical temperature.
Now, here's the fun part: It seems to handle Skyrim quite well, letting me sit comfortable at the highest settings, but has the exact same issue when running Metro Last Light, where the actually settings do not seem to matter, and there is a consistant stutter every one whole second or so - Perfectly similar to how battlefield seems to run.

Another thing I noticed is that this stutter is non-existant at the very start the game, getting my smooth performance for about 10-30 seconds. This leads me to believe it is a memory issue, but I'm no expert. What should be my next cause of action?

EDIT:

More about : 680 gtx poor performance driver crashes

October 1, 2013 4:25:43 AM

This might be stupid to ask. But did you download the driver from EVGA's homepage or Nvidia’s homepage?

If EVGA's homepage, then download a new driver at Nvidia’s homepage: http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers and chose to download Nvidia Experience too

850W should be more than enough. As i run a GTX 780 OC with I7 3770 on a 650W Dark power Pro

###Should I be worried that the card is socketed a little askew because of a really poor PC case?###
Do the card have a good connection to the motherboard's socket or is the part of the graphic cards PCI interface not fully touching the entire PCI socket?

If everything fails and that card is just one bloody mess no matter what. Then make a RMA at EVGA's homepage and ask for a replacement

- The drivers are from Nvidia's website. I will try to reinstall the drivers after removing them and removing the registry entries when I get home, to be 110% sure.
Nothing has changed after doing this.
- The case slot for the card causes the card to be tilted EVER SO SLIGHTLY, giving it a minor skew in the socket of the motherboard.

I see no issues in the DXdiag. Still it keeps me wonder why your case is makes you unable to place it correct without it tilting. As I know (still I might be wrong) is it a standard case design that have been used in past many years and doubt that all PCI Express used hardware manufacturers are willing to change standards because of 1 company (Beside Apple :p  )

Could you give me the name of your motherboard and the case? Use Speccy if you need help finding its correct name for your motherboard.

MSI 890FXA-GD65 (MS-7640)
- Just took note that the GPU and Motherboard are at 65 degrees celcius following a driver crash. Do not know if this is too much. I did clean my fans recently.

GPU on 65 is very normal in game. But start to worry if it get to 80-90 degrees. But the motherboard on 65 degrees. I find it a little high. My motherboard runs at 32 idle and around 40 max on full load in Prime 95 and that is on very low fan speed. CPU on 33 idle and max 63 on full load.

Try to BIOS update the motherboard. http://www.msi.com/product/mb/890FXA-GD65.html#/?div=BI...

If it fails to improve anything and it is still bloody crashing. Try (if you can) swap your friends GTX 660 out with yours GTX 680 and give his PC one hell of a test with Furmark to burn test it.

If it pass and not a single crash and he is able to play others games with your GTX 680 with acceptable FPS. Then it might be your motherboard that is having some issues. If not Make a RMA on EVGA's homepage and tell them about your issues with it. I've had 2 GTX 670 that i sort of killed with the lack of cooling and they just replaced them without a single question.

I can recommend ASUS Sabertooth R.2 990FX if it will be needed. Had the R.1 with a FX8120 and I can’t say I had issues.

I have had many cases that were badly made and you really had to force the video card in and sometimes it would not sit straight or one end would be raised more than the other but I have never had any performance problems from this, as long as all the pins make constant contact then I can't see how it would cause your issue.

First of all I would do a full stress test of cpu and gpu and see what temps you are reaching at full load just to rule out a heat/throttling problem.
I know it has been said already but double check your drivers, use the geforce experience program from nvidia and let it install the most up to date driver directly from there and also head on into the nvidia control panel and see what kind of settings you are running there, check you don't have anything silly enabled like supersampling or anything like that which would severely reduce performance.
Also how old is your hard drive? I had an old one that had intermittent read/write problems and it would cause major problems trying to correctly install any drivers/software before the drive failed completely.

A card fault is also always a possibility but sending the thing back for an exchange will take time so should be your last resort once you have ruled out everything else.
