Linux Mint Cinnamon is a great starting point. The cinnamon desktop is very friendly and almost windows like.

The easiest way to "play" with linux is to install Universal USB installer (HERE) on your windows machine, download Mint 15 (HERE) and install that iso on a usb stick. Use an 8gb stick and set the persistance file for 2gb. You will be able to download any linux "programs" you want to try directly to the usb stick and give them a try. The entire system runs from the usb stick and makes no changes to your pc unless you decide to install it, which can also be done from the usb.

EDIT: Please remove your duplicate post.

try either Ubuntu or LinuxMint

Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/
Try the online "demo" here http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/take-the-tour

Linux Mint http://www.linuxmint.com/

both are free & easy to use--Mint's default 'look' is closer to the standard Windows feel while Ubuntu's default 'look' is closer to the standard MAC feel, albeit the dock is on the left side instead of the bottom.

Linux is very customizable, but those 2 are some of the most recommended and easiest distributions to use.

Let me know how everything works out : )

And yes, both Ubuntu and Mint are free and software installs are far easier than you could hope for. Go to the Ubuntu software center (that's a program in both Mint and Ubuntu) and select what you want and it downloads and installs.

Also, use mouse as little as possible. Launching Terminal windows and cd'ing where you need to go is much much faster than GUI way. Executing the files trough CLI might be a problem, and archives. Though manual opening manual always proves useful.
In few words:
1. Less mouse, more keyboard, more TABs(autocomplete).
2. RTFM ;)

Sir:

Forget Linux ... your tone indicates a poor mental attitude for learning a tricky, difficult.to-use self-serve system like Linux. Learning takes frustrating YEARS of patient, dedicated effort.

Instead of suffering with UBUNTU or SUSE obscurities , buy a Wii or PlayStation. Drink Coke. Enjoy; live long and prosper.

There's no need for this. If you're having a bad day go eat some ice cream, you'll feel better.

Using Ubuntu, Mint or many others is very easy for most users. I teach people to use computers and my Ubuntu classes are always faster and shorter than windows and I have people that have never even used a calculator before. There are tens of millions of people happily using linux on their desktops and laptops. There are hundreds of millions of people using linux on their telephones (Android) totally unaware that it is Linux yet somehow they manage. Not everybody, not even most people have need for anything beyond out of the box capabilities. The only thing harder is if you run into incompatible hardware which is becoming more rare daily. Or if you really want to mess with your system to customize it or do repairs yourself. Can't really compare Windows to Linux in the customizing since Windows doesn't really want you getting that deep into it.

I recommend Rocky Road, could go for some myself just now.

Indeed it is! As a dedicated and long-term nix" usr ... and a teacher by profession I have no need to act-the-shill or pimp for Linux.

Learning Linux takes hard work and long-term commitment ... if you say or imply otherwise you really aren't telling the truth. Lacking 50% smart & 100% interest you can forget even a casual interaction with Linux ... say nothing of mastery. When a student expresses to me casual interest in Maxwells equations I send him off to a pal in the **history** department. Same here.

@nss000,

What's wrong with a student interested in Maxwell equations? What's wrong with a student interested in Fortran, Algol, or PL/1? If you cannot light the candle inside them (by showing them the door because they asked "stupid" questions), then don't even try to teach!

I hope by the time my grandkids go to school, you'll be retired (or better yet, fired) ;(

What a slovenly entitled attitude you have. Retired now, and easy-going in a few undergrad courses I feel sure you **never** would have made it to the stiff upper-division courses I enjoyed teaching. You think in life bytch-Gaia gonna give you a break, so teachers should KYA?

You better have a rich daddy or you will die in the gutter.

It's more of an impression that if someone inquires about using a computer and doesn't seem ready to devote all waking hours to learning it you'd offer them an abacus. For the normal user the learning curve of Ubuntu is far lower than windows8. I'm speaking as someone that has to teach them to people with no base at all.

I think that your assessment would carry more conviction if you hadn't displayed such a consistently hostile attitude to Microsoft, as a company, in the past. I can't trust you to give an unbiassed opinion (and I'm sure that you make quite sure that your students find it more difficult to learn Windows than Linux).

In reality all consumer OSs present a very similar learning curve. I think the attitude displayed by both of you is rather silly and more reminiscent of Apple fanbois than anything else.

My impression is that OP speaks English as a second language, not that he is lazy or entitled. Perhaps nss000 had some bad experiences with students and is projecting onto this thread?

In any case, most mainstream distributions will work. My recommendation would depend in part on the hardware. If it is an older machine you would want to go with something more lightweight than Ubuntu.

Linux has fine multimedia software available, including XBMC and VLC.
