Hey everybody,

I'm getting a IBM Lenovo T60 laptop to use as a board computer on my sailing boat. I will rely on it for weather charts, communication and navigation. All very simple tasks that won't ask much from the laptop or its OS. Most important is the power consumption and reliability (even more so then power consumption). What OS would be best in this situation? The laptop comes with windows XP, but I've had alright experiences with tinyxp for some specialist projects. I've heard though that windows 8 is supposed to be even lighter on power consumption.

What would you choose and what pro/con arguments are there for all these (or other) operating systems?

Thanks!

Core duo T2300, should support 64-bit operating systems fine, right?

XP is what most people use on their board computers, but that's mostly because that's what the laptop comes with and not so much because it's the lightest/most energy efficient...

If you would stick with XP, what's the argument of not going for tinyxp? It should run all programs that run on XP too, right? Big question is, does it consume less power?

All of the following requires experimentation, that said Tiny XP rev 9 or 10 are excellent, there are version of MicroXP that are striped down version of Tiny... however will they allow you to run what you need to run??

Ubuntu also is hugely efficient and portable versions can be run off a thumb drive, whether that saves you more power ?? You could also investigate under-volting your laptop to reduce power consumption, the CPU VID Voltage Range is 1.1625V - 1.30V... can you set it hard at the lower end?? again testing is the only way to know and I've never done that to a laptop so I'm of no help there. Can you disable one core?? reduce the memory speed and volts ?? and still have enough to do what you need to do what you need reliably.

Lots of fun if you're so inclined.
