What FPS increase would I see in BF3/4 should I upgrade from a FX4170 to a FX8320?

Hi there, I'm currently running a Gigabyte HD7850 2gb alongside a FX4170. I can currently play BF3 at about 60-70 FPS on smaller maps, and I've just tried the BF4 beta on Siege of Shanghai and my FPS wont go above 30 even on low, as well as getting major stuttering and freezing. I'm 90% sure that it is the lack of power from my CPU, so what sort of FPS increase could I expect if I were to upgrade my CPU to a FX8320?

Hmm i have an 8320 @ 4.89 and a 7970 vapro x overclocked and bf4 beta i was getting 60fps consistant which suprised me since i went from playing 100+ in 64 player on bf3

I would say oc your cpu if it isnt it helped me tons but id reccommend adding a second 7850 if possible once you upgrade your cou since it most likely wont handle them really well. Bf4 is supposed to support 8 cores now and soon be optimized for amd using mantel in the near future

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to say you are wrong. You are the only people I have ever met who say BF is a more GPU intensive game. Battlefield is massively more CPU intensive game while playing online (which is the only thing I'm really worried about with BF). I have run bottleneck tests and they have shown that my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU: my GPU is only being utilized to about 60% most of the time whereas my CPU being used at 90-100% all the time. If I got a second GPU it would make no difference. Besides my question is what FPS increase would I get if I do as stated at the top of the thread, not "what should I upgrade instead of that?". I appreciate what you have said, but can you please answer my question.

Thankyou for your answer, but do you have an estimate as to what FPS increase I would see in BF3 multiplayer?

Since your cpu is already bottle necked adding another gpu will only make it worse. Cpu upgrade first with a nice heatsink and then add another gpu or sell it and get a 7970. Make sure your powersupply can handle xfire if thats what you plan on doing

My gpu on bf3 in 64 before my higher ic wouldnt stay at 99% usage sometimes dropping to 80-85. May have been because of msi afterburner as well since it seems to cause problems for me atleast

now i'm just a forum nub, but as you said yourself your CPU is the sticking point in your system, and if it is bottle necking a mid-range graphics card like a 7850 (i have one too :D) then it should be what you focus on in your upgrade, especially since BF4 will be optimized to run with 8 cores, meaning that you can really cheaply upgrade to an fx8320 to get 'potentially better than un-clocked 3570K' performance (but only in BF4 for the time being) without having to change your Mobo.

the people telling you to go for Crossfire are crazy.

because it is in no way shape or form cheap or easy, or necessary looking at your rig

With regards to BF3, in single player campaign you will not see any performance increase because the game does not really rely very much on the CPU. However, in multiplayer you should see an increase in performance. The below multiplayer performance chart @ 1280x720 resolution with a GTX 680 the FX-4170 was able to get 48.5 FPS. The FX-8350 get 67.8 FPs. That is a 39.8% increase in performance.

Does that mean if the resolution was 1920x1080 would going from a FX-4170 to the FX-8350 will also result in a 39.8% increase? Unknown, the conservative answer would be no. There would be an increase in performance, but not as high as 39.8%.

Buy an FX8320, you'll get at least a 20-40% bump due mainly to doubling of core count on a more stabilized architecture. Then buy a Hyper Evo 212 $30 and OC your 8320 it'll still be $10-20 less than the 8350 and you can get better performance out of it, then get yourself a 1GB 7850 they'll run you 130 bucks.

That should get you where you want to be for the best price point in this area I am getting an 8350 right now, I was gonna go with the 8320 but had a little more money than expected so I chose to shell it out because I'm going to OC the Beast, also the reason you'll want a 1GB card is because they're $30-40 cheaper than the 2GB cards, and you're not gonna be able to use it's Vram through CFX anyway so you can just save money. The performance boost of 2 7850s is Phenomenal you'll surpass the 7970 with ease and then if you decide to OC those 2 cards you'll see even more performance. Hope this helped and good luck with whatever you decide

UPDATE: Also I just checked you'll get 4 Free Games valued at over $100 with my solution... Just saying...

You are absolutely right. I know this because I upgraded from an fx4170 to a fx8320 5 months ago. My 4170 was at 4.8GHz and my 8320 is at 4.6. My FPS in BF3 jumped 20 more fps on average. Its worth noting that I only get studder in bf4 when running windows 7. I just updated to 8.1 and it runs Brilliantly. Windows 7 had this problem and was only using 50 of some cores and less of others yet i was getting low fps and studder even when fps was high. to make it worst the GPU was only under 60% load. Windows 8 changed that. my CPU is more uniform, closer to 70%load and the gpu runs 98-99% load at all times. No studder. but I also have a 7950.

why are you telling the guy to get a 1GB card? My old 7850 1GB XFX would studder on BF4 under windows 8 because it lacked Vram. Basically, ur telling him to run crossfire 1GB 7850s so he can run BF4 on medium/Low. He already has a 2GB card, matching that with 1GB would make both cards in total 1GB. You are basicly telling the guy to run an 18 wheeler on a 4 cylinder engine. It will get there..............EVENTUALLY. The game in question is already requesting 3GB of GDDR.

No not at all you can cFX a 2gb and a 1gb 7850 they get high performance on bf3 and bf4 they'll beat out a 7950 in performance by quite a bit. VRAM for the 2nd card in a cFX doesn't matter because only the first card will be used for direct rendering and the 2nd card for offloading qeued information

Sorry man but ur wrong and I know this as factual. It would force the other card he already owns to run with 1GB. I owned a 1GB 7850 and I'm telling you it runs out of vram in bf4 and a consiquence is massive studder. Like I said "You are basicly telling the guy to run an 18 wheeler on a 4 cylinder engine."

OP: I upgraded from the 1GB card to the 7950 for that sole reason as BF4 for me uses around 1.5GB at 1080p. I got a good deal as it was around the time of the new R9 launch and amazon was trying to clear up old stock i guess. Got one brand new for 214$ have it overclocked to 1200MHz and haven't looked back. Prices are up around 250 now but you can still get a used one for as cheap as I got mine. However, a 7850 2gb would be a better buy for you. and definitely an 8320 first when you can.

It is mainly GPU but you'll see a small increase depending on how many players are on a map.

I got you man, I didn't know that they throttled VRAM in CFX setups, but if you're going to throwdown $250 on a gpu just go with one of the R9 280x's they're $300 and from the benchmarks that I've seen run BF4 and most games really well(seeing as to how they're basically just 7970GHZ maximized for gaming potential)/(and rebranded)

I haven't tested many games yet, but I upgraded from an FX 6200 to an 8320 just yesterday.

I'd say my average FPS increase in games has been around 50, especially those that are CPU intensive/single-threaded. Love it. Once I OC it it will perform even better.

what games do you have in mind exactly, I'm upgrading from an A8-3870k to an FX8350 in a day or two(whenever it gets here)I'm guessing I should see a more drastic improvement than the FX6200?

Mainly older or single-threaded / CPU dependent titles. CSS/TF2/GMod/Minecraft, so far. I can now play all with highest AA and AF.

FX 6200 FPS (low gfx settings):
TF2 - Min: ~45, Avg ~70, Max ~220 (no other players around on that max)
Minecraft - Min: ~50 Avg: ~57, Max ~61. Just in normal gameplay, furthest render distance, lowest gfx settings.
G-Mod: Min ~40, Avg: ~70, Max ~140

FX 8320 (games maxed, AA+AF full too):
TF2 - Min: ~65, Avg: ~100, Max ~290 (no-one around, realistic max in combat 180)
Minecraft - Min: ~65, Avg: 90-100, Max: 170 (looking at the sky, usually max is around 130-140)
Haven't tested much else so far, just what I noticed when playing.
BTW I am on 1360x768 but these games tend to be CPU limited so I doubt I'd see much FPS loss from going Full HD. Also I can just OC to make up for that.

My minimum FPS has increased a bit (probably around 15-20) and my maximum has increased exponentially. As I said, when I OC to around 4.4 it should be even better. I'm not sure about the performance of your current chip but you will definitely see an increase. I'll be playing Skyrim and some other games later, so I'll update this post with them.

right, like I said. Its best for him to go with a second 7850 (2GB) rather then a 7950. I got my 7950 for 214$ and is almost 100$ less then the 7970/280x. I chose not to crossfire because of the limitations of my previous card, 7850.
