Computer Profile Problem

I booted my computer up yesterday but when I got to my desktop there were almost none of the icons that I had previously and every program that I could access acted as though it was the first time I'd used it (ie. wanting me to register, etc). It is almost like it's not accessing my profile even though I am still logging in the same as always. Any ideas?

Check this out. If your using XP go to My Computer then the C drive and then Documents and Settings. If your using Vista or Above Go to Computer then C Drive and then Users. If you see your user name in there and then you see it again with like a .temp or your username.computername then windows may have created your a temporary profile because for some reason it can't log into yours for what ever reason. Most of the time its a stupid thing that happens after windows updates and it changes certain settings and doesn't change them back after the updates are done. this how ever is a easy fix if this is the issue.

If you go to documents and what not are your files still there? And you didn't do a system recovery did you? (System Recovery is where it pretty much sets the PC back to when you first bought it if its a store bought PC)

Yes, all of my files are still there when I got to the USER menu, nothing has been erased that I can tell. How can I get my computer to sign me in under my profile and not this new blank one? Also, I did try to do a system recovery but it kept failing and nothing changed that I could tell.

I didn't initiate any updates but you know windows, it's like everytime it boots up it's doing 2,380,427 more updates so it's certainly possible. But like I said, I didn't see it do any updates, nor did I tell it to do any.
