How does a 2560x1600 monitor look at 1080?

Thinking of getting a 2560x1600 monitor to be used for gaming.
My GPU is a GTX 780 so it is reasonably powerful and should sail through older games at this resolution but I would fully expect a lot of the games that are about to come out in the next 6 - 8 months are going to struggle to keep a steady and high framerate with all the details turned up on 1600 even with that gpu.
SLI is something I have no interest in and I refuse to play at low framerates or with anything less than everything on ultra so I would expect that at least some of my games would still have to be played at 1920x1080.

How would this look on a 1600p monitor?
I know running anything at 720 on my current 1080 monitor everything looks really pixellated and blurred - much worse than it does on a native 720p screen.
Would the monitor upscale it so that it looks reasonable or would running at a non-native resolution mean everything loooks butt-ugly at 1080p.

Anybody got experience of this and can tell me what to expect?

If that is the case then I would prefer to stick to 1080 for now. :(
