Hey,

The wireless router that we've been using has had a broken antenna for probably about 2 years now. The low speeds and disconnections have finally made it clear that we need a new router. The house is 2 floors and about 40 feet wide by 30 feet long. The router is in a downstairs bedroom and we need the signal to get from there to a bedroom that is kitty corner and up a floor from the router. There are about 3 or so standard drywall walls between these 2 areas. Running ethernet or a powerline is not an option. The budget is about $100. The ability to load custom firmware(like tomato) would be a plus. Certain features like QoS would also be plus.

The router I'm currently thinking about purchasing is this: http://www.amazon.com/Medialink-Wireless-Broadband-Inte...

Thank you.

Edit: Looks like the budget might be closer to $150 if it'd be worth it.

Hi!

I have been looking into the Asus router family. There seems to be an old workhorse, RT-N16. followed up by more capable (and more expensive) models, RT-N56, N66, AC66. N16 and N56 are both under $100 on Amazon and perhaps the later models for 150 or thereabouts.

All these have glowing reviews in all the forums I have checked out. N56 onwards they are all dual band. They can take the DD-WRT firmware (not sure about Tomato - some of them can, for sure), which will boost the range a bit. Perhaps you can also consider getting high-gain antennas from Amazon as an add-on, if you have the change left over from the router.

I'm still a couple of months away from my own upgrade, so it'd be interesting to know your final decision and experience. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I'm strongly thinking about the Asus N66u or perhaps the N56u, but I'm going to give it a bit more research.

I'm actually thinking I might stick the with the medialink. We don't really *need* anything more than a stable internet connection. We won't ever be transferring files between computers or anything like that. And our internet package is something abysmal like 30 megabits. I'm just worried the singal won't go as far as needed.

:)  Go for it!
(and a mental note to myself to research the media link!)

Why don't you consider the ASUS RT-N66U if your budget up to $150?

The Medialink Wireless N Router is a great choice. A mighty little router for a great price. You cant go wrong. :)
