Hi Guys, sorry i know a lot of people complain about performance in gta IV and i am also now experiencing issues, i can play even games like Crysis 3 at medium with 1680x1050 quite ok but for some reason my GTA lags if you just touch the graphic settings any higher, im updating my catalyst control centre now from 13.4 to 13.9 and also updating my GTA to the newest version, do you guys think this will help? im wondering if i should update to Service pack 1, would that help?

My PC Spec:

AMD Phenom 2.2 GHz 9500
4GB DDR2 667mhz Ram
HIS ATI HD5750 iCooler IV
ECS A780GM-A Black Series
500GB Seagate Barracuda Sata II HDD
Windows 7 64-Bit

Obviously the 1090T BE has more power than your current CPU. You should check if your cpu is causing a bottleneck in GTA IV. If not, the CPU upgrade alone shouldn't make much difference.

The upside of the newer AM3-compatible processors is that you...

Well i think GTA V is also going to be a port... But thats not relevant right now. would you guys say my cpu is at fault? it is old i know but it is atleast quad core. or do i have a crapo GPU or both? haha

Your GPU is ok for this game but your CPU is not only a dual core (quad core needed) but its speed is reaally low.

What GTA IV update are you using? 1.0.4.0 is the best patch, Im currentlly playing the game with a graphics mode.

Edit: The game runs well on high end PCs, my gtx 550 ti (a little bit faster than a 5770) with a i5 4570 can max out the game with no problem from 45-50 fps at 1280x1024, now Im using a graphics mode that lower my fps to 26-32.

Btw my pc is not high end at all.

It is older and has a lower clock speed, but it is quad-core

I suppose my Phenom is a Bit Bleh but honestly its not so bad, i mean to play crysis at that res and detail is impressive, and for me to upgrade this system just for GTA feels like a ripoff so i dont know, if i dont succeed then im just binning this game, will leave me dissapointed though i must say......

Im busy installing the latest update, 1.0.7.0 i think it is?

Yeah thats the latest update but the 1.0.4.0 is the most stable/performance patch.

Yes chapapa ive considered overclocking but each time i touch the fsb speed i get blue screen as soon as i log in to windows, ive also set the ram speed to minimum to try and cure it but still to no avail, also AMD overdrive does not let me adjust the clock speed, its just greyed out, some people suggest thats because its a cpu that came with a OEM Type PC from a old packard bell, but the thing is, i put that old OEM pcs cpu in this ECS motheboard with new ram and everything, so i dont know maybe something in the OEM Cpu itself is also locked. would have thought someone figured a way to unlock such a problem by now but could not find any such thing.

Sh*t...I used to have the same problem with old core 2 quad q8300 2.5, every overclock (even the tiniest) resulted in an endless loop of my pc turning off and on by itself.

Theres nothing you can really do for a performance increase then.

AHA! Ok so after the updates, i had the game set the graphics to automatic detection and then completely turned off shadows and now its playable at 1680x1050, funnny enough all the settings are set at high with V sync on but i switched v sync off rather because i know that kills performance also.

If it runs MANTLE, it will be, if not...well...it is what it is...

I don't believe the only issue was with the graphics API for GTA 4. I'm pretty sure it was CPU demand issue that contributed to much of the poor performance with that game.

Using MANTLE may alleviate some of the problems, but if it's going to be an overall bad port again, then expect performance to be rather poor again.

Yes, we all look forward to the next GTA game, and the bad porting job that will mean that we need to break out the Liquid Nitrogen and OC our CPUs to about 6GHz to overcome the CPU bottleneck. If they can be bothered to do a port, I hope they do much better this time.

Sorry i know we are getting a bit off topic, but i can get a AMD 1090T BE Phenom II X6 for a good price, will 6 core make a difference or is GTA limited to 4? either way, atleast the 3.2 clock speed will help i think.

After that if i need a upgrade i suppose its time to look at a complete new pc because high performance and even budget ddr2 800 ram is crazy expensive. but i think the 667 is ok for now since it affects only loading speeds i think? please correct me if im wrong...

For AMD gpu users maybe.

The upside of the newer AM3-compatible processors is that you can one day upgrade to a better motherboard and DDR3 memory without breaking compatability.
