I am building a PC and was about to get this RAM, but on Newegg it said it was compatible with the i7 1st/2nd/3rd gen...I didn't know I had to check for CPU compatibility as long as it works with my motherboard.

The RAM is DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) and my motherboard supports it, will it not work with my CPU?

Here is the newegg link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-231-...

It will work. Anandtech just did a great article on Haswell memory scaling though and the conclusion is to go with DDR3 1866 or 2133 if you can afford it.

This is actually cheaper as well as faster.

My mobo says it supports: DDR3 3000(OC)/2800(OC)/2666(OC)/2600(OC)/2400(OC)/2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066

Does this mean that I would have to overclock to get 1866 or 2133?

It will support it just fine. All you have to do is enable XMP ( extreme memory profile ) in BIOS. No overclocking involved.
