Hi friends, I'm new here.

About 3 weeks ago I built my first rig, and have just decided to attempt to overclock it. After reading up on everything, I felt that I was ready to try it out! However, after downloading RealTemp before overclocking I noticed that my idle temperatures were in the mid 30s. I decided to run a stress test using Prime95 and under full load it went to the 80s.

From what I have read, this is abnormally hot for a non-OC'd CPU. Am I being paranoid or is there something genuinely wrong?

Solution
yes. clean off all thermal paste with qtips and 90% rubbing alcohol, then use some artic silver 5, there are a lot of guides online for how to apply it.

let us know how hot your cpu is under prime after that.

I had the same temperatures for the same hardware. Dont worry.

In short I discovered the temps were normal but the Haswell chip is not good with prime 95.
I learned that prime 95 produces abnormally high temperature with Haswell no matter what is your cooling solution and intel recommends something else to stress test. Forgot what to be honest.

Personally I allowed my mobo software to o.c and run stress and temp checks. Just to get some rough reference points.

results:
It would only o.c to 4.3ghz at 1.225v on stock fan. Then after strestesting it wont add more voltage and stop the cyle there.

On h80i it would pass the 1.225v point and go for 1.275v then go upto 4.5ghz.
This change I concluded means that its working fine.
I was too cheap to get aida64 so I tried to play very cpu intensive games and temperatures were always in the forties while im oc to 4.5.
Before on stock cooler it wss 55-65 on 3.9ghz at default voltage. So I guess its true prime 95 is not for haswell.
