I am about to purchase a new CPU, specs here:

Processor: Intel Core 3rd Gen i7-3770 Processor (3.40 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.90 GHz)
Windows 8
1TB Hard Drive, 3.5 Inch, 7200rpm, SATA
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600Mhz
16X DVD +/- RW Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 1GB GDDR5

In my current desktop, I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTS250 1GB GDDR3. Is my old card better than this new card (the GT640)? I'm thinking it still is. Also, will my modular Corsair 650w PSU still be compatible with my new system? Thank you for any and all advice!

well actually GTS250 is ahead of GT640 though it lacks DX11 (which is still doesn't really matter at this performance level). performance wise it is about the same as GTS450.

so if you want something that better than GTS250 you're going to look at GTX650 (which is actually a GT640 slapped with GDDR5 instead GDDR3 used in GT640) or 7750

Thanks Thanatos! Would the AMD Radeon HD 7570 1GB GDDR5 be an upgrade over the GT640 at all? I'm not a heavy gamer, just play League of Legends, not very graphics heavy. My GTS250 runs it perfectly fine so if any of the new cards are better than my GTS i'll be more than happy.

No, the 640 is about equal to a 7750.

Thanks for the responses! One quick thing, so we've established that the GT640 is better than my GTS250. Is my GTS250 better than a Radeon HD 7570 1GB GDDR5 (which I think is a step down from the GT640)

WEEEEEEELL!!! why dont we look at the bechs guys!!!

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/612?vs=535

if we compare GT640 2GB DDR3 vs HD 7750 1GB DDR5 we can see which one is clearly the winer ;)... and im not saying just loock at the benchs, i know it could be imposible for the price but ths HD7750 is paired with the GTX 650... i think is a great choice for the money i think it is costs $10 more than the GT640 could be a great upgrade

I know this is late but many people look up old posts for help..No the GT640 is not a better card per say. Yes it is dx11 and yes it is a newer card. Does it play games better "no". The GTS250 is a better card for games. I have had a GTS 250 I bought new years ago (BFG GTS250 1gig ddr3). It is now in my daughters Pc who plays games such as skyrim, portal and various new games. In the real world this card still plays theses new games at a decent frame rate on medium to high settings. I do have the card OC'd a little with afterburner. I am not here to tout the GTS 250 as a gamers card but the fact is do your home work before you upgrade or buy a new card if your on a budget. Newer does not mean better in the video card market when it comes to gaming.

This a follow up post for those like me who read old posts for help..Here is a link for u..If u look the GTS250 sits two slots above the gt 640..even if yours has ddr5 thats at best one slot move up the hierarchy ladder. Toms does a good job and is a respected site for those who depend on others testing and ranking hardware..Real world is the truth and I know for a fact the gts250 is better for playing games with as I have had both cards..
