Hi, My system has 8GB of RAM but I am thinking about upgrading, I do not want to jump up to 16GB so I was wondering if 12GB will work, also do you need even amounts of RAM in a system? example; will 3, 5, 7, 9GB work?

My Build:
CPU: Intel i5 3470 @ 3.2 Ghz
RAM: 8 GB Kingston Hyper X Genesis
Motherboard: GA-Z77MX-D3H TH
GPU- Nividia GT 640 OC Edition (Gigabyte PCB)
PSU- 700 WATT OCZ
SSD: Kingston 120 GB
HDD: 1TB WD Blue

thanks

Your mobo supports up to 32GB (4x8GB), best combos are 2x4GB, 2x8GB and 4x8GB, 4x4GB will work though 2x8 is a better combo for 16GB), preferably if 1600 or better all sticks from a single package so that you can use XMP, which will set the sticks up for you

For best performance, you want to have the same DIMM configuration on both channels and to do that, you have to add DIMMs in pairs. Since the smallest DDR3 DIMMs are 1GB, that does translate into even minimum increments.

You will likely get half a dozen people telling you to use all identical DIMMs but that rarely is necessary when operating at standard JEDEC timings. It may become a problem if overclocking the RAM or pushing aggressive timings which are likely to require higher-binned DRAM chips.
