in the case of rendering...
Is the difference between the 2 chips great or are they fairly close in terms of performance?
...and in the case of gaming?

Assume that they are paired with equal level/performance parts [same system etc.]

It seems that the FX-8350 is about equal to an i7-2600k. So thus the i7-4770k is probably 20% stronger at stock, 20%+ when both are overclocked (Not much headroom on the FX), the i7 uses significantly less power, and the i7 costs a lot more....

It looks to be doing 20-25% better, but as CaptainTom said, its more expensive--I'm not sure if its worth the extra cash. I kinda prefer price/performance ratios, but I also enjoy faster renders : \
